I’ve found God, says man who cracked the genome
Times Online ^ | June 11, 2006 | Steven Swinford

THE scientist who led the team that cracked the human genome is to publish a book explaining why he now believes in the existence of God and is convinced that miracles are real.

Francis Collins, the director of the US National Human Genome Research Institute, claims there is a rational basis for a creator and that scientific discoveries bring man “closer to God”.

His book, The Language of God, to be published in September, will reopen the age-old debate about the relationship between science and faith. “One of the great tragedies of our time is this impression that has been created that science and religion have to be at war,” said Collins, 56.

Please define "scientist." You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

Has he said that was what he meant? Hawking authored a book entitled "God Created the Integers." I felt that meant that he believed in God who created the universe, not that he wanted something to replace God.

I've always felt that God is the Ultimate Scientist, who knows all and understands all. The closer one is to understanding as much as is humanly possible, the closer one is to understanding all, as God does (keeping in mind that the capacity of God's understanding and knowledge dwarfs the best man is capable of).

The mathematical laws and building blocks of life (i.e. DNA) that make up God's creation are so complex only God can fully understand it all, after all, He made it. The best we can do is try to understand as much as we can. The more we can figure out, the closer we are to God.

And for that matter, God is physics. God created physics. And everything else.

Good point. I agree. The more I study math and science, the more it seems intuitively true that there has to be a God.

Xenu. As likely an explanation for "who" as any, I suppose. But then, Xenu was actually an "intelligent designer." Created humans out of clams, doncha know.

Frankly, I can't see how a scientist can be an atheist.

God created evolution.

Yes, if it exists, he created it.

Evolution created man.

If it exists, it may be the tool which he employed.

Man created religion.

Yes, God never created religions. He created man and gave him many gifts, among them the freedom to choose what to think.

Religion created God.

A belief cannot create.

God is.

Actually, I don't know. I cleared my head of childish things when I became a man.

"Among Collins’s most controversial beliefs is that of “theistic evolution”, which claims natural selection is the tool that God chose to create man."

If God had used evolution as a tool, would that be explained in the Bible? Obviously, it is not. My Pastor insists that because the Bible does not say that God used evolution as a "tool," that proves he did not. To me, that makes no sense. The Bible was not written only for people who've read Darwin. It was both unnecessary and impossible for God to explain the theory of evolution in the Bible. I think that the laguage of Genesis is about the best way God could have explained the Creation, if he did in fact use evolution as his tool.

[ “I see God’s hand at work through the mechanism of evolution. If God chose to create human beings in his image and decided that the mechanism of evolution was an elegant way to accomplish that goal, who are we to say that is not the way,” he says. ]

Yes.. or even some other more wonderful creative way..
This Universe is merely a "Landscape Painting" on a wider scale/scope..
If "God" is not an artist then what is he?..

Some humans draw stick-men and childlike trees, others paint paintings much more sophisticated than that.. The Spiritual Painting is being painted now.. only thing needed is a discerning spirit and love of art.. An extra universal Spirit painting a universal spiritual masterpiece...

The critics abound but there are indeed a few art lovers marveling at the talent needed for such a "project".. Others are so mired in their second realitys they think universal painting is a dalliance.. pity too.. But then appreciation of art is such a esoteric thing.. Little wonder (one said) "You MUST be born again".. <<- as an art lover I suppose..

Collins has been a professing Christian for as long as I've known of him; he's never made any secret of it. He mentions it in this 1998 interview. Yet he was chosen to head the genome initiative. I guess that means what you just wrote is full of it. As usual.

What, specifically, did he write that is full of it?

From the article: "...publish a book explaining why he now believes in the existence of God" RWP, The operative word is "why", not "when".

BB: "Makes perfect sense to me!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~
It does not make "perfect sense to me!".
I agree with the idea that evolution was God's elegant way to form the physical body of man.
I do not agree that the physical body of man is "in God's Image".
God is Spirit. It is only Man's spirit/soul that is "in the image and likeness of God".
When was the last time you saw a human whose body looked like a burning bush -- or a pillar of smoke -- or a pillar of fire -- or a being with feathered wings.-- or...?
Or, for that matter, why was it necessary for Jesus to "take upon himself the form of a man.."?
Book suggestion: "The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag" by Robert Heinlein. Covers that very idea.
So does the bible.. except in more detail with more interesting characters and a believable plot.. Hmmm that would make the bible a auto-pictography.. wouldn't it.. Whats more it would be non fiction..
