U.S. mustn’t give up on Somalia’s future
Boston Herald ^ | June 11, 2006 | Boston Herald editorial staff

Posted on 06/10/2006 9:57:55 PM PDT by ConservativeStatement

The Islamic fundamentalists of Somalia have taken control in Mogadishu, and the U.S.-supported warlords opposing them have retreated to nearby towns. In Washington, the post-mortems have already begun.

The argument of “some experts” quoted anonymously in The New York Times was that financing the warlords, who are the leaders of major clans, “may have helped unnerve the Islamic militias and prompted them to launch pre-emptive strikes.”

The Bush administration owes no one an apology for supporting the warlords in return for help in trying to capture al-Qaeda members. The Islamic Courts Union has been sheltering al-Qaeda, some of whose leaders used Somalia as a base to bomb U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998.

We don't need to be financing Warlords, we need to be doing the best by the Somalis, and kicking Al Qaeda's a$$.

Sure, I'd like to see Somalia be peaceful and prosperous, but why is it always up to The United States to fix the entire world? Can't anybody else do something? And why don't they?

They're all talk and platitudes. Typical "liberals".

"Sure, I'd like to see Somalia be peaceful and prosperous,"

Screw Somalia. Its not our mess anymore, they don't want us there.

Of course nobody else will help these people. They'll badmouth the US and say why don't we help them. When we do they'll bring more accusations of unilateral action.

And why should we give a crap about the future of Somalia. We went in there on an ill advised "Mercy Mission" and lost a bunch of good men for nothing.

(U.S. mustn’t give up on Somalia’s future)

Why? Who gives a rip about Somalia except for the three or four warlords fighting over it like the last slut in the bar at last call?

I'm guessing we're going to have to go in there sometime. AQ will start setting up training bases and plotting attacks from a safe haven if we don't. We should pick the time though. And perhaps perform certain actions to keep them on their toes.

Seems to me we have been down this dusty road before.

Remember Haiti?

I was there decades ago in the immediate aftermath of a severe hurricane, when my Air Group was involved in rescue and initial aid.

What I witnessed was eerily similar to the rank destitution prevailing in Somalia today.

I suggest that we write this one off as "undoable" -- and dedicate our assets to countering the threat where it is more clearly defined and acute.

IOW, let the savages hack each other to pieces. A bit less to sweep up downstream.

Let them all kill and imprison one another. They are all so good at in-fighting. Let their hatred for 'tribes' of another stripe reduce the ba$tards numbers then if we need to we'll go in and take care of the rest of them. Until they stop creating them, we have to keep killing them. Sorry to be so blunt, but that's the way I see it.

I was speaking rhetorically, not specifically about Somalia. I don't know if I give a hang about the place either (except I'd like some revenge on the MF'ers that killed our guys there), but I was just commenting on the general ineptness of the rest of the world. All talk and no ability to do anything except bad mouth us.

What I was really saying is how ungrateful and incompetent the rest of the world is. We're the real deal about doing everything.

Good plan. Let's hope for massive casualties and that it would take for a couple years or so. Then we'll just come in and "clean up".

I agree with you and sorry that didn't come thru on my other post. Everytime I watch Blackhawk down I get so pissed I end up turning it off. Clinton sent those guys in and didn't give them the tools.

Nobody else does anything because they don't care. The UN will send a few troops in. They end up making the situation worse and raping everything they can catch.

They use a lot of famous actors who look so similar because they have crewcuts.

We went there and saved over 500,000 from certain hunger death., under Bush I.

Then Black Hawk down, Clinton pull out, etc...Then Iraq, and "US mind your own biz".

I say it is unfixable, plus we should leave it fester as an example of what happens without our help, and as an example of UN/EU powerlessness. And cuz we should stop caring.

We tried. Now no more. (An we should not have been involved with the warlords recently)

The rise of AQ in Somalia is positive results of the success in Iraq and Afganistan.

When the conqured areas are secure and the fire is out in Syria and Iran, Somalia can be delt with.
