With just five months to go before the midterm elections, President Bush, whose once-faithful base has abandoned him in droves, is turning to the same conservative hot-button issues that won him re-election in 2004 -- homosexual "marriage" and judicial nominees. The president, now fully aware that his plummeting approval ratings could cost the Republicans control of one or both congressional chambers in November, will use his radio address today and a speech Monday to push a constitutional amendment banning same-sex "marriage," just as the Senate prepares to vote on the issue. The crux of his argument is simple: A majority of Americans support the idea that marriage is exclusively between a man and a woman, and activist judges across the country are thwarting the will of the people.

Miss Marple, it is not a guest worker program. Bush favors the Senate Bill, which provides for permanent legal residence to every illegal who can obtain a forged utility bill. Which means all of them. If a guest stays permanently in your house, he isn't really a guest is he?
Bush addressed the Chamber of Commerce Thursday, whose members enjoy higher profits from cheap labor. Do you suppose that the donations of these businesses to Bush and the RNC might have anything to do with Bush's support for amnesty?

A president should not turn a blind eye to his oath of office depending on what he may or may not have campaigned on before he was elected. Using your logic "W" should not have invaded Afghanistan or Iraq based on the fact that he never said anything about doing so while running for the presidency. 9/11 changed that and the current situation with illegals does the same thing because it is a crisis too. It's not the same situation it was in 2000.
If he said that he wanted to put all illegals in jail, some of you would still be saying it was "amnesty" because they weren't being deported.

No - The temporary workers program is a separate issue from that of the current 12 million illegals! - A complete separate issue in terms of having to deal with them -
The issue of dealing with the current terrible flawed temporary worker program will only address those from this time forward (it does nothing or solves nothing in regard to those who are currently here illegally!).
Posting what GWB stance is on a needed reformed temporary worker program has NOTHING to do with the issue of those currently here illegally (who have come here over the last 20 years). - That is a complete separate issue and of course there would be nothing mentioned in a reform proposal (regarding the temporary workers program) regarding what should be done with the current illegals here.
They are part of the overall issue with dealing with illegal and legal immigrants but solving the two issues are two complete different processes - (because fixing the current temporary worker program does nothing with regard to those who are currently already here illegally.....that is not hard to understand).
You are suggesting because immigration wasn't a major issue in 2000 or 2004...and because you didn't know where GWB stood regarding those 12 million who are currently here illegally.....that somehow he is turning his back on the GOP base.....That is foolishness.
You have not shown a thing showing GWB has changed his position on those currently here illegally - Not a thing - The only thing you have shown is exactly what GWB has said and still says....the temporary worker program needs to be reformed / fixed.
GWB never once said in 2000 or 2004 that he was completely against those currently here illegally finding a path to citizenship if they agreed to a penalty, paid a fine, background checks, etc, etc.

Furthermore you are all wet with your analogy regarding Iraq and Stan - Because it is you saying he has changed his position on immigration and turned his back on you.....Not simply that you don't agree with his policies regarding immigration (which would be the case if as CIC he decided not to go into Stan or Iraq....one could say they didn't agree with him not going....no one could say "he has turned his back on us" ....as if he had agreed to do something different prior).
This immigration issue along with the terribly flawed guest worker program is a 40 (20) year in the making problem. Not a 4 year in the making problem whatsoever - GWB is the first President in the last 20 years to address it! (not too mention taking on a number of other serious issues within these past 5 years as well).
Again, GWB position on immigration hasn't changed one bit in the last 5 years. He has turned his back on no one - Rush Limbaugh makes this point clearly all the time (even though he doesn't agree with him fully regarding immigration).
I don't support the Senate bill, and I don't believe you ever bothered to ask me what I actually think about this issue. No matter.
As far as the Senate bill, it seems to me that the President had to support it in order to get something out of the Senate, with the intent to get a better bill through conference.
Of course, we could end up with nothing because of intransigence on both sides, in which case the only gain that will have been made is the National Guard on the border anad the improvements in border security that the president has already put into place.
Maybe that would be best...just kick it down the road for the next president to take care of...sort of like how every othe president has treated this issue for the last 40 years.

What temporary worker program? There is none now. Bush proposed creating one, not "reforming" any.
Would you please show me where Bush proposed legalizing 12 million illegals prior to 2005? I posted two primary sources in which Bush proposed a temporary program, without disclosing any permanent residence plan. He pushes for it now, show me where he made this intent clear prior to being reelected. If you can't show it, then concede Bush has betrayed us by getting elected by conservatives, and then pushing a bill written by Kennedy.

Here is AZ we passed prop 200 in 2004 ...if only our wimpy governor would enforce it.. the courts ruled it's legal.
It WAS an issue here in the SW in 2004, that's when we passed prop 200 to McCain's chagrin since he actually showed up in AZ to try and defeat it -- however what was the choice Kerry (who said he would throw open the border) or Bush (who we knew was an open border guy)???
