President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

I don't mean to be a condescending "world traveler", but I get the feeling that very few people who bash Mexico on this website have ever been to Mexico. I'm not a big world traveler: I've only been to Canada, Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii (outside of the continental US.) But whenever I've been to Mexico, 80% of the Mexicans I've met have been very friendly and kind towards me and my family.

I sailed twice in the San Diego to Acapulco yacht race, and at the end we always went out to drink beer at the bars in Accapulco and celebrate. The locals just loved us, and real Acapulco cliff divers would walk up and show you the little scars on their forearms from hitting rocks on the sea floor after their dives. We went to middle class bars, not the bar at the Hilton, and people were really friendly and wanted to talk to us and meet us. This was over twenty years ago, but I don't think people have changed much down there. The drug cartels are more brutal and ruthless, but the average Mexican is kind and decent.

How do you figure that? I've been big time for real border security and deporting illegals and no more light weight tactics with them. This speach is all the things conservatives have been wanting. What basis do you have to support your assertion that millions of registered conservatives will not vote because of a speach that outlined most all of the things that those same conservatives have wanted to hear Bush say on the border. The idea of that is just crazy. If anything, those conservatives who want real border security, like me, "border bots" as you want to call them, are saying what I did tonight, "It's about frikken time!". THAT is what the millions of conservatives who want border security are saying. The only people who hated this speach and don't like what he said in it are liberals who aren't voting Republican anyway.

It's a sad day and I thought I saw tears in the President's eyes when he talked about the closing of the border. We have a very long history with Mexico and they are for the most part good people. Compassion is what is needed most right now while we do what we have to do.

hoo boy, what a wacky ride. Some "minutemen" citizens decide to take things in their own hands to stop the invading onslaught, intially are casitigated as vigilanties, and then a few months later, the president orders the guard to do the exact same thing and calls is good security policy. we might as well have the magic 8-ball in office. Question: Will the is help our security? Answer: "Reply hazy, try again."

I am curious why this speech is at 8 Eastern.

The president's bedtime is far more important to him than anything else. The only way he can go beddy-bye at 9 p.m. is to give his speech at 8 p.m. To Hell with whether or not that is effective ...

I have begun to have very negative thoughts about this man ...and what is really going on.

Tancredo doesn't think it's amnesty.

What did Tancredo say exactly?

A large majority can't spell or read their native language, how are we to expect them to learn English?

Practice and hard work.

Good points A.Hun. This problem has been ignored, or amnesty granted (by a Republican president) for my entire lifetime.

This plan makes sense and I absolutely would not want to see US agents going house to house and dragging women and children from their homes.

I've never understood the single issue voters who think the way to get their agenda item addressed is to either not vote or vote for the other party. LOL

When looking at the effects of illegal immigration (sweden etc)shouldn't we look at where the people come from and what they are doing here? Do you like what you see?

The Reconquesta is a more interesting question. To be honest, I don't think it's realistic.

Hopefully, you are correct.

The burning question is what did Michael Savage think (and I use the word think in the loosest sense of the word) of it?

So why did you ask me if I fear you? Have you given me reason to fear you?
apparently not.

>>It isn't true though. I watched Dobbs and both they both had issues with the speech. Dobbs hated it and was very upset.

It's not clear who started the rumor that Dobbs liked the speech but they are certainly in error.<<

Legal, either born or naturalized. Haven't seen any polls, but I hear it everyday. The most vocal are the latest that have become citizens, but none I know support the illegals.

Don't know for your area and I'm sure there is an overall affect, but I see this more by unscrupulous contractors, who should be jailed for hiring them. All the construction trades are hurting for people, it's hard, it's high, it's hot, it's heavy, it's not as comfortable as sitting on their couch in the a/c collecting welfare checks and drinking cold beer.

Yes, the anchor baby issue needs to be addressed, but I was referring to our very own citizens that abuse the system.

Yes, but we can support our president against his enemies in a time of war. Always. The weak kneed need to join the traitorous scum or stop calling themselves Republican, Conservatives, or even Americans.

The enemies the President faces in the war are OUR enemies, they are not only his enemies. In addition, the illegals are our enemies as well. They are breaking our banks, bringing disease, killing and visiting violence upon our citizens causing a 50% increase in those jailed in prisons and they are springing up gangs and creating ghettos.

They should all exit and make an application to come through for work the legal way. No problem then IMO.

To all who think they don't want to assimilate.

There are some who don't want to assimilate. I'd love to be able to identify them and throw them out. One way to identify them is to force them to learn english and make sure they obey all the laws. This isn't perfect, but it's something. Under Bush's plan, for the FIRST TIME, immigrants who want to be citizens will have to LEARN ENGLISH.

If they don't want to learn english, they will be deported, and they won't be in line for citizenship.

This is a proposal that at least addresses the problem of those who want to be "legal",but never be american.

A lot of the people who only speak spanish are legal immigrants and actual citizens from an era where we didn't require English. If we could project this forward to making all official business be in English we'd be solving a big problem.

We have patients who have lived in this country for many, many years and they still require an interpreter.
