In 2004 3 whole employers were fined for hiring illegal aliens.

That about says it all.

Expect more baloney tonight.

Troops on the border is just symbolic and stupid. An employer crackdown is what could repatriate a lot of illegals quickly and cheaply.

Agreed. I'd be more impressed by an administration telling us about what they have done on this issue, rather than telling us what they will do.

Promises require credibility. The current track record precludes credibility.

Government To Go After Employers Of Illegals

This would actually be unfair to employers. Employers are very limited in how far they can go in verifying ID and background, due to anti-discrimination laws.

"In 2004 3 whole employers were fined for hiring illegal aliens."

This line is never repeated by the "Bush has increased funding for border agents by 66% crowd." Yes, they really say that despite the simple fact that all spending is up.

"Government To Go After Employers Of Illegals?"

The government plans to crack down ever harder on employers who harbor and hire illegal immigrants, pursuing companies that ignore the law so they can exploit cheap labor.

So much for Tyson Chicken – or is the “crackdown” aimed only at landscapers and roofers?

Not gonna happen. The government has no spine for law enforcement. Between pressure from the business lobbies and threats of racism charges from the hispanic lobby, the gov't is like a wimpering little girl. In the end it will do what it has always done about this problem... NOTHING.

Tonights speech is just another dog and pony show to appease those who actually pay for the whole problem. But PAYING FOR IT doesn't get you a voice in Washington today. Now... if you BENEFIT from it... well, you've yourself a damn megaphone.

If Bush gives us the 'baloney' tonight... the Republican party gets the 'salami' come November. The employers and the states have to be put-on-notice that dealing with illegals means fines & jail-time.

I posted this last night, fits here....

We are all suckers, repub's and demophilth alike. All this speech tomorrow will be about is lets mollify the rabble(read voters).
Does anyone actually think the "political donor" class would EVER give up "an unlimited supply of $8 dollar an hour workers"?
This is ALL about economics, always has been. Why are the "political donor" class clamoring for more high-teck workers every year? The more foreign teck workers the "political donor class" can get into the country the lower the pay of all teck workers. This problem can be placed at the feet of the greedy, who would sell out America for an extra 1/2% return on investment.
Now imagine the ripple effect on the economy that "an unlimited supply of $8 an hour workers" has? Ask anyone with a background in economics what happens when supply is increased, then ask what happens when supply is unlimited.
We are being screwed by the politicians who owe all the the 'employer/political donor' class.
Call me what you will, but I do know that you need wealthy people to live in a wealthy country. I suffer no "class envy", but I believe the game is now being rigged by those with the money to rig the system.
I have heard the LIE spoken from the mouth of our president, whom I may add I walked precincts for in the last 2 general elections, "they are just doing the jobs Americans do not want to do".
The truth is simply "Why pay the wages an American would demand when a criminal immigrant would do this job for $8 an hour".
This could be the death of the middle class, IMHO. This is ALL about keeping wages down of the majority for the benefit of the minority.

I am sure that this is a naive question (and I'm not from Rio Linda, dammit!), but do employers know that they are hiring illegal immigrants?

Every new job I have had I needed to bring in my passport (or other proof of US Citizenship) on the first day of work.

How do these employers get away with it?

Secure the border first! If the first approach is removing illegals, We can expect a huge backlash against consumers.

Government To Go After Employers Of Illegals?

How about cutting off all government "benefits" to illegals. No public schools for their ninios, no subsidized housing, no free health care. You don't get rid of cockroaches by closing your doors - you get rid of them by cleaning your house.

The trend in recent years has been toward weaker and weaker enforcement.

That's certainly an understatement:

Employer Investigation Efforts of U.S. Immigration Authorities:

Fiscal Year Worksite Arrests Notices of Intent to Fine
1993 7,630 1,302
1994 7,554 1,063
1995 10,014 1,056
1996 14,164 1,019
1997 17,554 865
1998 13,914 1,023
1999 2,849 417
2000 953 178
2001 735 100
2002 485 53
2003 445 162
2004 159 3

The average annual worksite arrests under Clinton was 9,329 arrests. The average annual worksite arrests under President Bush is 456. This is a 95 percent reduction in average annual worksite arrests under President Bush.

The average annual notices of intent to fine employers of illegal aliens under Clinton was 865. The average under President Bush is 79.5. This is a 90 percent reduction in average annual notices of intent to fine employers of illegal aliens.

And then there is 2004 where, under President Bush, only 3 notices of intent to fine employers of illegal aliens were done. 3!! But that was President Bush's worst year. Let's compare best years then.

Under Clinton his best year for Worksite Arrests was 1997 with 17,554 reported. President Bush's best year was 2001 with 735 worksite arrests reported. This is a 99.7 percent reduction in worksite arrests under President Bush when comparing best years.
