Government To Go After Employers Of Illegals?
The government lies so much about its intent to crack down on illegals that it is hard to take this seriously.
The government plans to crack down ever harder on employers who harbor and hire illegal immigrants, pursuing companies that ignore the law so they can exploit cheap labor.
"We are going to move beyond the current level of activity to a higher level in each month and year to come," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said yesterday. He pledged to "come down as hard as possible" on violators.
Has something changed? The trend in recent years has been toward weaker and weaker enforcement.

That about says it all.
Expect more baloney tonight.
Troops on the border is just symbolic and stupid. An employer crackdown is what could repatriate a lot of illegals quickly and cheaply.
Promises require credibility. The current track record precludes credibility.
Hell could not have frozen over as the rains have not turned to snow.
Lies, all lies.
This would actually be unfair to employers. Employers are very limited in how far they can go in verifying ID and background, due to anti-discrimination laws.
This line is never repeated by the "Bush has increased funding for border agents by 66% crowd." Yes, they really say that despite the simple fact that all spending is up.
"Government To Go After Employers Of Illegals?"
"An employer crackdown is what could repatriate a lot of illegals quickly and cheaply."
Start with roofers, Subcontractors (drywall, framers, etc.), landscapers and yes, unions.

That's funny. I don't recall any such "anti-discrimination law" that keeps an employer for ascertaining citizenship/immigration status. Please provide proof that such exists.
You got that right pal.
A real con job.
Not gonna happen. The government has no spine for law enforcement. Between pressure from the business lobbies and threats of racism charges from the hispanic lobby, the gov't is like a wimpering little girl. In the end it will do what it has always done about this problem... NOTHING.
Tonights speech is just another dog and pony show to appease those who actually pay for the whole problem. But PAYING FOR IT doesn't get you a voice in Washington today. Now... if you BENEFIT from it... well, you've yourself a damn megaphone.
It isn't the occasional illegal that might be identified, it is the accusation against someone who is not illegal that will cause the law suit, and anyway with the difficulty in determining the status of anyone with paperwork, it is beyond the scope of the hirers to know if someone is or isn't, and you have to be able to prove that they are both willing accomplices. Just pray tell how does an employer find out the status of a person they want to hire, expecially when they have all the correct documents idicating they are citizens.
If Bush gives us the 'baloney' tonight... the Republican party gets the 'salami' come November. The employers and the states have to be put-on-notice that dealing with illegals means fines & jail-time.
Just go after the ones who have NO documents! Payroll records is another way,if he's working for less than minimum wage the employer just broke two laws. This thing is doable , we just need someone willing to do it.
Such an animal does not exist. The very nature of our system renders any true reformer impotent in the face of moneyed interests.
Nonsense. In every job I've started in the last 10 years or so, on day 1 I had to show up with proof of citizenship like a birth certificate or a passport.
If?
You're missing the point. It's not about requiring ID, it's about verifying if your birth certificate is fake or not. The employer has to accept it if it looks real.
