Immigration is not the pox neo-Know Nothings make it out to be
The Jewish World Review ^ | 4/31/2006 | Tony Snow

Princeton University sociologist Douglas S. Massey reports that 62 percent of illegal immigrants pay income taxes (via withholding) and 66 percent contribute to Social Security. Forbes magazine notes that Mexican illegals aren't clogging up the social-services system: only 5 percent receive food stamps or unemployment assistance; 10 percent send kids to public schools.

~~~~snip~~~~
Economist Larry Kudlow praises Hispanic entrepreneurship: "According to 2002 Census Bureau data, Hispanics are opening businesses at a rate three times faster than the national average. In addition, there were almost 1.6 million Hispanic-owned businesses generating $222 billion in revenue in 2002."
~~~~snip~~~~

Total crime and property crime in California are half what they were in 1980; violent crime has fallen more than a third. The state's Hispanic population during that time has increased 120 percent.

Another way to look at this is that 38% of Illegal Immigrants do not pay income tax, and 32% do not pay Social Security tax, and over 90% do not educate their children and assimilate them as Americans, when given the opportunity to do so for free..

Most of those are tamale stands that offer sub-standard meat stuffed in animal-feed corn flour.

It's the elephant in the room. If they admit that they're supporting lawbreakers, their entire premise falls apart. They're just liberals of a different stripe. Some support Tookie, and some support Mexican criminals.

When I get caught for speeding, I get punished for it.

Let me get this on the record. You see illegally crossing the border of the United States AND illegally working in the country without the proper documents to be the same thing as speeding? Yes or no?

No to the first, yes to the second. On the first, illegal immigration is a problem, but I don't regard that act as being inherently criminal. It isn't a felony like rape, robbery, kidnapping, murder, and the like.

On the second, speeding is actually worse than working without the proper government documents. At least speeding is sometimes dangerous to others. I uphold freedom. I should be free to hire anyone I want on any terms we can agree. And ditto if I am a worker seeking employment. Instead of whining that illegal immigrants aren't getting government mandated wages and benefits, we should repeal the laws so mandating these wages and benefits. If someone is willing to work at lower wages and benefits, well, that's part of what freedom means. He is still doing better than he would in corrupt, socialist Mexico.

Some skilled foreign H-1B "guest workers" are recruited and supplied under contract to American firms. As employees of foreign firms, no Social Security taxes are withheld.

How old is this information? My fiancee is on an H1-B and he pays Social Security taxes.

Sure -- but if the number of illegals is not accurately known, then one doesn't know if illegals are statistically more or less likely than, say, blacks or Hispanic citizens to be in prison.

I'll grant you that, as far as it goes, but as wildly divergent as the estimates are of how many illegals are in the country, I don't think anybody's suggested they come even close to being 30% of the population. In any event, I'm not trying to make a point about criminal proclivity but about strains on our financial resources and criminal justice system.

Has any poster on this thread call President Bush names yet?

Last night somebody called President Bush an "arrogant psychopath who deems himself King, Lord, and Master"
here

Really funny the knee-jerk reaction of otherwise rational posters.

For some reason, Tony Snow seems to equate illegal miscreants with good, hardworking Hispanics. I have no doubt the two sets intersect, but what good are we doing our own country if we don't have the resolve to boot out the border-jumpers, be they Hispanic, Irish, Arab, Slavic, etc.

You are equating speeding with illegal invasion and calling speeding more dangerous than the balkanization of America?

Wow!

Here is where I part company with my friend Tony.

"Total crime and property crime in California are half what they were in 1980; violent crime has fallen more than a third. The state's Hispanic population during that time has increased 120 percent." ---- fine, maybe the violent crime rate should have decreased by 2/3.

ILLEGAL ALIEN CRIME

Police commanders may not want to discuss, much less respond to, the illegal-alien crisis, but its magnitude for law enforcement is startling. Some examples:

• In Los Angeles, 95 percent of all outstanding warrants for homicide (which total 1,200 to 1,500) target illegal aliens. Up to two-thirds of all fugitive felony warrants (17,000) are for illegal aliens.

• A confidential California Department of Justice study reported in 1995 that 60 percent of the 20,000-strong 18th Street Gang in southern California is illegal; police officers say the proportion is actually much greater. The bloody gang collaborates with the Mexican Mafia, the dominant force in California prisons, on complex drug-distribution schemes, extortion, and drive-by assassinations, and commits an assault or robbery every day in L.A. County. The gang has grown dramatically over the last two decades by recruiting recently arrived youngsters, most of them illegal, from Central America and Mexico.

• The leadership of the Columbia Lil’ Cycos gang, which uses murder and racketeering to control the drug market around L.A.’s MacArthur Park, was about 60 percent illegal in 2002, says former assistant U.S. attorney Luis Li. Francisco Martinez, a Mexican Mafia member and an illegal alien, controlled the gang from prison, while serving time for felonious reentry following deportation.

more correct figure would be 20-25 million. I do not believe any government stats on illegals, I believe my lying eyes instead.

So you've counted 20-25 million illegals with your own "lying eyes?" Pure hyperbole -- you don't have any idea how many there really are.

Why should I believe your claim, any more than the alternative?
