Small world, isn't it Splash? (background information on Mrs. Alito's tears in the hearings)
1/20/06

Posted on 01/20/2006 9:54:55 AM PST by dead

I have an interesting tidbit of information to share.

My old college roommate's mother is friends with Judge Alito's mother. They go to the same church in Roseland, New Jersey.

Well, the judge's mother shared something with her that hasn't been in the papers and may bring a different perspective to those tears Alito's wife shed in the hearing.

It seems Judge Alito's wife (the former Martha-Ann Bomgardner) has had personal reasons to dislike Senator Kennedy since long before Splash's shameful treatment of her husband.

Long ago, the Senator was also less than kind to girl whose family was friends with the Bombgardner family. A girl that Martha-Ann knew fairly well before her untimely demise.

A girl named Mary Jo Kopechne.

That explains a lot, actually!!

Listening to teddy's drunken, self-righteous tirades would make me hurl,
h*ll, it maybe would even make me stoop to violence!

Can you imagine! Having to let a person like that sanctimoniously rip apart your husband's character.

Wow.

If it's true, it's an amazing story.

If it's not, the story on the face of it is amazing enough.

icwhatudo, as requested, I followed the links to the WaPo article in both blogs. You are correct. The WaPo article does not contain the information the blogs do about Mrs. Gwen Kopechne calling Mrs. Alito. As I was checking, it also occurred to me to wonder who Gwen Kopechne is, since my recollection is that Mary Jo was an only child. Turns out Gwen Kopechne was Mary Jo's mother.

Mary Jo was 29 when she died in 1969, 35 1/2 years ago. Somehwere in the cobwebs of my memory, I thought both of her parents died some time ago. Unfortunately, I don't have the time now to do the necessary research. So I did some quick math to roughly calculate if it is likely Gwen is still alive.

If one arbitrarily assumes that Gwen was about 20 when she had Mary Jo, she would have been about 49 when her daughter died. That would make her about 84 now, so at least theoretically she could still be alive. If you or other FReepers have the time to dig into whether or not she died some time ago (as I believe in the mists of my memory), we would at least be able to know if the story is even possible.

...and not in the back of a Buick at the bottom of a pond...

I believe that Kennedy killed Mary Jo while driving an Oldsmobile, not a Buick. While they are both GMC cars, you would think that the mother of Mary Jo would have that factoid correct, considering the magnitude of the incident.

The following paragraph in the linked blogs (and several others I found via Google) does not appear in the Washington Post article which the blogs link to. That makes this paragraph highly suspect and dishonest in terms of implying it came from the WaPo.

While out of the room, Alito's wife received a call of encouragement form Gwen Kopechne. Mrs. Kopechne told Bomgardner (Mrs. Alito) that while she understood the emotions that caused her to leave the room, she should be thankful her family member being abused by Sen. Edward Kennedy was still in the room, and not in the back of a Buick at the bottom of a pond.

Would I go so far at this time to call it an outright fraud? No, but only because I don't have enough information to do so. The dishonest links to the WaPo, in and of themselves, do not indicate whether or not Gwen Kopechne called Mrs. Alito. However, the dishonest links sure do raise a huge red flag.

Thanks, icwhatudo, for calling this to our attention.

I have no idea what the source is on those blogs. The comment looks like a joke to me, but I don't know.

I only know what my friend's mother says Judge Alito's mother told her.

In twenty years, my friend has never lied to me about even the smallest thing. And his mother is an upstanding solid person without the slightest hint of nut about her.

I don't know if the story is true, but I can't identify anybody who would lie in that group, assuming the judge's mom is telling the truth.

I really just posted it to see if somebody could confirm it or prove it wrong. I don't expect anybody to prove it wrong though, because I trust my source.

While that may be good enough to pass Dan Rather's credibility test, I'm afraid I'd have to see considerably more evidence before I'd believe this.

Makes a good story, though. And regardless of this tale's veracity, Ted Kennedy's behavior at the Alito hearings was boorish beyond redemption.
