House GOP leaders have decided to drop an Arctic oil drilling proposal from a budget bill.
Apparently so.
"There is a clear message from the election results all over the country. The American people, by and large as a body politic, are looking for a more centrist approach."
SHERWOOD BOEHLERT a Republican representative from New York
You can check my posts to see how vehemently I have supported voting republican, even for RINOs. I think I'm done.
Really, isn't that absolutely ridiculous. They have no time for confirmation hearings before January, but they can smack around some oil execs for making a profit in a capitalist society.
For me, being against drilling in ANWR is just about as hard to understand as being against PBA bans - there's absolutely no rhyme or reason to it. The locals want drilling for the economic benefits, we want drilling for the fuel cost benefits, Congress SHOULD want it so we're less dependent on foreign oil, and the animals don't care because it's a vast wasteland where they don't hang out anyway. Utter silliness that we haven't started this ball rolling by now, five years into Bush's administration.
Politicians work for their constituents. Maybe a lot of people in their districts called or wrote in to say that they don't want the ANWR drilling? Polliticians do what their constituents want or they don't get elected.
"Thats because Democrats heartily oppose the overall budget bill, giving House GOP opponents of drilling in the Arctic enough leverage to have the matter killed."
There's the key right there.
Another "gang of 14" type moment. Side with the Dems in the House.
Boehlert is an absolute pimp. Always has been.
Here's the answer: Don't contribute to GOP, RNC, or any Republican political campaigns. If they can't figure out who elected them, why waste money?
ANWR is not a wasteland. And the amount of oil that it may have would at most reduce our foreign imports of oil -- by 2020 -- by 4%, from 70% to 66%. If national security is a concern due to dependence on foreign oil imports, there are a lot of things that could be done now rather than worrying about drilling from a place that won't supply a drop of oil to us for another 10 years.
The drilling is in the BUDGET bill because it is being counted on as a REVENUE item, bringing $1.2 BILLION a year in leasing fees.
Revenue items go in the budget.
Not anymore it isn't.
Nope.
Just when I think there's light at the end of the tunnel (the nomination of Alito), there's a virtual cave in like this.
It's almost like the GOP WANTS to loose!
A party of spineless eunuchs.
I'm tired of all the worry about Rove, and Libby, and Chenny, and Bush, and the rest of the useless figureheads of the Executive branch. It's just a ruse to distract us from the screwjob we're getting from the worthless Republicans we elected to the house.
It's the House that takes our money, squanders it appeasing our detractors, and then stands in the way of progress.
It's time to forget the Democrats. It's the Republican party that is the problem.
Gilchrest is also somewhat of a surprise. The thing is, we may be discounting the hunting lobby. Both Bartlett and Gilchrest have a lot of hunters in their districts (you can hunt for deer, turkey, and bear among other things in western MD, and lots of waterfowl on the Eastern Shore). The hunting lobby has always been Republican and conservative -- and also has a very strong conservation streak. They have previously opposed oil and gas development in the west of the lower 48, too. So it may not be entirely due to environmentalism.
The "Republican Senatorial Committee" exists to elect republican senators. Their first task is to fully support the existing republican senators against all attacks. In some cases this gets senators to vote on party-line for some issues we would otherwise lose. But in any case that is their job.
If you don't like it, you should avoid giving money to the RSCC. I don't give them money, but I don't get mad at them for what they do (just HOW they do it -- like attacking Chafee's primary opponent for ties to oil companies).
I DO get mad at the RNC for stuff, because they are supposed to represent the party, not the politicians we elect.
You're totally wrong on this. The 1002 area of ANWR, where drilling would take place, is the prime calving ground for the Porcupine caribou herd, which is probably the largest remaining herd of wild hoofed mammals in North America. In the fall, the 1002 area is also where thousands of snow geese fatten up for a long southward migration.
Blah, blah, blah, when did hoofed mammals get the right to vote, oh BTW, Caribou use the Alaska pipeline to warm themselves up in the winter..
About the geese, I guess the french would be mad since the geese wouldn't have a place to fatten up to make a superb pate.
My post wasn't about the caribou's right to vote. My post was about the assertion that the animals which inhabit ANWR don't utilize the region (I think the poster said "the animals don't care because they don't hang out there" or something similar).
The primary reason that the caribou prefer the 1002 area for calving is that it helps them avoid mosquitoes and bot flies.
