Let's see them support her the way they supported the first African American male appointee. Thurgood Marshall?

Just the fact that we won is victory enough. :o)Such shallowness.
See, it puts the President on notice: Ignore your base at your own peril. :o)
Keep telling yourself you are the base.

She's history and people like Boxer are celebrating "another Bush loss." She also claimed that the far right Conservatives sank the nominee and that now Bush will have go with a "more moderate" nominee. Holy cats! The RATs are in celebration. Boxer also referred to the many problems of this administration and that it appears that many people are about to go to jail for corruption. GAG!

ready to get flamed by this but here are some recent thoughts -
Bush knew the Dems would go after his next nominee because they "let" Roberts through, figuring he was replacing Rehnquist with Roberts so that was OK.
Bush and Harriet are good friends and she knew the next nominee would take some heat, and she was willing to do that.
If the Dems go after her they will really make themselves look bad and she will be strong enough to still look good....but she will bow out so Bush can appoint his real choice Janice Brown. After the Dems made fools of themselves over going after Harriet, they can't badger a second woman, they will let Brown sail through and Harriet will have loyally "fallen on her sword" for George.
OK so it's some 6 hour road trip afterburn thinking but it IS possible and it would avoid Brown getting a hard scrutiny, plus she is a black woman, the Dems would look even more ridiculous going after her.

Does anybody here deny this basic fact? Anybody at all? OK, so if this truth is undeniable, then what the hell are we afraid of? We can take this message to the people, and put these clowns completely on the defensive once and for all. This is truly one of those cases where the only thing to fear is (blind, irrational) fear itself. But, but, but, if we do that, Ted Kennedy or Maureen Dowd might not like us < /Spineless Republican Senator mode>

Anyone who called for the President to withdraw the nomination prior to hearings IMHO was against an up or down vote. Do you really want me to type the names?
You want me to believe that all of those calling for her name to be withdrawn were concerned with HER best interests. Yeah right. The Brooklyn Bridge is for sale, interested?
To: Guenevere
I'm with PD. We need to have a fight over this nomination. Finkstein D-CA was just on saying an SC Justice needs to represent all views. Wrong. We need to make sure this is not about votes but ideas. Rush has this nailed. We need not to win but to win in the realm of ideas.
To: Cedric
No, he hasn't. They just think he has.

"Pouting" is not a name. It's an observation of a behavior.
Of course I'm not proud of the name-calling, from either side (and it is important to remember that it came from both sides, by the way). The ends don't justify the means. But, that said, what needed to happen, happened. Could it have happened without the vitriol from both sides (there's that word again, "both")? Likely. In the heat of argument, things are said. Again, if names hurt you that badly, how can you stand to be online? I've had my heritage, my ethnicity, my sexual orientation and preferences, my intelligence... all questioned at one time or another (not that much on Free Republic, however). I don't put much stock into insults or names from people who are online, and who have never met me.
So your side lost this one. It happens. It'll happen again. Find a better reason to be upset than "I didn't get my way", or "they were mean to me". The victim role is very limiting.

Kristol was on FOX this morning and grinning like a cheshire cat. Actually, he was "smirking".He is an *ss. He's the kind of guy who hangs around at night in his house in an expensive smoking jacket with a fine cigar in hand ........ and yet he doesn't even smoke.
He's a little weasel.

President Bush could have sent a qualified nominee I don't buy that. Most of you are blaming past incivilities on the fact that the president nominated Miers. It's like the man who said, "Officer, it wasn't my fault I bashed my wife's face in. SHE messed up dinner!"
It was president Bush's fault that many opposed this nomination. The vitriol, the sheer viciousness of the opposition, however, was NOT his fault.
To: Cicero
Oh, I think the Republicans in the Senate have been watching this fight with a great deal of attention, and more than a little fearfulness. You could see them looking over their shoulders the past couple of days. They rode into the last midterm on Bush's coattails, due to a very large turnout of social and religious conservatives. Normally the party that controls the White House loses seats in a midterm election. 2002 was almost without precedent. It could happen again in 2006; but ONLY if Bush nominates a good, strong candidate for the Supreme Court and the Republican senators support it. If not, millions of voters will stay home and the Republicans could lose some or all of their margin in both houses. It's not that the Democrats are wildly popular. It's just that the Republican base would be totally disgusted with them. So true it needed to be posted again. The Base must be motivated....
