A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997. Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Welcome to TGIF at the Finest! We hope you've been having as much fun as we have with our essays and/or spotlight on various FReepers. From the beginning, we've been kicking back on Saturdays and Sundays and simply reviewing the features of the week; our weekend threads now start on Friday and continue through Sunday. If you missed seeing any of this week's threads and want to say hello there now, just click on the link for that particular day. If you'd like to drop in and out of this thread today through Sunday, please feel free to do that also. One of us will try to be around to see the welcome mat is still out, put the coffee pot on, and maybe even bring fresh flowers for the table. : )

"Wear Red" Friday
You will soon see a lot of people wearing Red on Fridays. Here's why..... The Americans, who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are not "organized" to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions are. Many Americans, like yourself, and all their friends, simply want to recognize that Americans support our troops. Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our troops is starting Friday and continuing on each and every Friday, until this is over, that every red-blooded American who supports our young men and women, WEAR SOMETHING RED.
Word of mouth, press, TV -- let's see if we can make the United States, on any given Friday, a sea of red much like a home football game at a University. If every one of our memberships share this with other acquaintances, fellow workers, friends, and neighbors, I guarantee that it will not be long before the USA will be covered in RED - and make our troops know there are many people thinking of their well-being. You will feel better all day Friday when you wear Red! So let's get the word out and lead by example; wear RED on Fridays.
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE. FOR US, THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED!! GOD BLESS AMERICA.
received this in my email June 10th, the author is unknown. I am wearing red today and every Friday ~ Billie

Mole day?
Mole as in facial mole, or mole as in launched from its burrow on a pillar of fire type mole?

Mornin' Billie. Bailey thanks you for the Pledge this morning. That March 05 pic was about 65 pounds ago. He still thinks he is a lap dog.
Have a great weekend. Chores awaiting attention once again. Maybe I'll tackle window cleaning before winter - then again, maybe I won't.

Ed Brice: Jarheads, leathernecks ... and other fighting words
Special to the Star-Telegram
Jarheads, leathernecks ... and other fighting words
Q: Where did the term "jarheads," referring to U.S. Marines, come from, and what is its meaning?
-- D.B., Stephenville
A: According to National Public Radio reporter Tom Vitale, who interviewed Anthony Swofford, author of the critically acclaimed memoir, Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles, the term refers to the "high and tight" haircut favored by Marines and not the actual Marines themselves. The cut makes their heads look jar-shaped. The cropped hair on top is the "lid."
To some old-school Semper Fi loyalists, the term is still derogatory. Indeed, one story of its origins holds that it all started with WWII sailors who used the term to describe the high-collared Marines dress blues uniform. Something about how it made 'em look like a bunch of Mason jars. Probably followed it up with a couple of choice words about their mothers and sisters. Fighting -- not my idea of a good time.
Personally, I think it's like all slang terms that are either racial or fraternal. Only jarheads are allowed to call each other jarheads. It always means something different when others say it.
In his interview with Vitale, Swofford, a former Marine sniper, had this to say about what "jarhead" means to him: "The book is a jar, and I've poured the Marine Corps and my military experience into it. And I've capped it and it's the thing I offer the reader."
Q: My husband and I are having a little argument about the Red River. Exactly where does it begin and where does it end? I think it goes into the Mississippi River; he says it goes into the sea. I really can't believe that.
-- J.M.B., Haltom City
A: And what sea would that be, exactly? The Mediterranean?
Curtis Campbell of the Red River Authority, says the south fork of the river starts in the Red River Valley of New Mexico, and the north and salt forks in the Texas Panhandle. Rich Brontoli, executive director of the Red River Valley Association, says Mile 0 of the Red River is at the Mississippi.

Hi, tulip:
I've no idea of what it means to Bab
'Tis a concept which I have never had to grapple
Like a light bulb, it remains dim at the thought
As I loudly, stickily munch away on a Caramel Apple
Raucously reveling in relaxation, I repose
Imagining the Moulin Rouge and comely women doing the Can-Can
Capturing the attention of each and every man
With fluttered layered skirt, gorgeous gams and the glimpse of gartered hose!

Hello Finest FRiends.. quick drive by. Funeral today. Father of Friend from church who is also in my weight loss support group. Throwing together a few lose ends before I leave for game tonight.
I have had on brown wool slacks, dark red sweater & red tweed blazer.. coolish here, actually seasonal. We have been spoiled with warmer than norm weather. But think I will change into some more ball game related clothes - warmer & water resistant.. that can stand the drizzle on & off we are having today.
Nice links which I just scanned here.. and snugs.. love your collage
thanks for getting us started this AM Ms.Billie.. you can send a little of that nice warm Texas weather up to Ohio...anytime now!

Babychick, LCDR Mr. Scubachick, and I want to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts for all the prayers, graphics, good wishes and sentiments sent to us by our freeper friends, known and unknown! You have no idea how much these messages meant to us and how they touched our hearts! We know Mama_Bear explained I probably wouldn't be online for a few days, and sure enough, (as usual) she was right! lol However, please know that even though our thanks are belated, your kind words will stay with us for the rest of our lives! Grammy, we will definitely come up to WV to see us and blackie, you signing off with "a grateful old curmudgeon" made us laugh! StarCMC, thanks to you and Mama_Bear for spreading the word! Hugs to all!
