MIERS & LAST-MINUTE DROP-OUTS (Priscilla Owen did not withdraw her name)
National Review Online: The Corner ^ | 10-12-2005 | Kathryn Jean Lopez

MIERS & LAST-MINUTE DROP-OUTS [Kathryn Jean Lopez] A journalist friend just spoke with a top Texas lawyer who spoke with Priscilla Owen last week. He says that she "most emphatically" did not withdraw her name from consideration to the Court. If the White House spin is that Harriet Miers got the job because nobody else wanted it, it would seem that the White House is at a desperation point. Posted at 12:07 PM

Was this journalist from an elite School of Journalism?

Funny, NRO and RedState.org were reporting on Owens removing her name the weekend before the Miers announcement.

Were they wrong then or are they wrong now? I don't know how reliable the friend of a friend comments are at any time.

Priscilla needs to "shut up" before they sick Lindsey Graham on her! Thou shalt not make the White House look bad!

Not being sarcastic...just hopeful, based on the signs.

The administration expected this to just die down once they put out their spin and marshalled the troops.

Problem was as least half the troops don't want to fight this battle for them. And the stuff they're throwing out isn't sticking.

They're getting more desperate and throwing out stories just to see if they're bought by the people who are daring to dissent. Very, very few people are buying it, except for the ones who have already bought into it from the beginning.

Don't think Bush will with draw here directly, but there will probably be a meeting of the minds where the best course of action is determined to have the nominee take the hit and cite some sort of personal reason to withdraw her nomination.

I'd look for a graceful withdrawal, from the nominee, of course, maybe early next week

I think I'd rather see the circus that results in the Judiciary Committee.

There are going to be a lot of people with egg on their faces (pundits and Freepers alike) if Miers does not "gracefully withdraw". I have never seen such a frenzy on this site.

So this woman... spoke with this guy...who spoke with this guy...who spoke to Owen.

Well if that's not an irrefutable source I don't know what is!

(If the White House spin is that Harriet Miers got the job because nobody else wanted it ...)

That over-states things by quite a bit. The anti-Miers folks are over-the-top. Again.

Oh, thats right...Meiers was the "most qualified." Obviously more so than Priscilla Owen, who has only been a judge for YEARS!

Don't blame the RINOs. When Bush supports the RINOs for reelection, like Specter & Chafee, supporters of the Prez can't turn around and blame them for not supporting conservatives.

The way to eliminate RINOs is to support conservatives in the primary even if it means losing a race here or there. If Bush had supported Toomey over Specter, then perhaps Chafee wouldn't be so uber-liberal. Now Bush is supporting Chafee.

Priscilla Owen would make a great justice.

But not as good as Harriet Miers.

Lotta rumors and invective flying around this place, but that is a potentially "divisive fact" (Owen was sincerely interested - divisive because it pits judicial conservatives against the present power-elite of the GOP) if true.

A source close to the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals wrote in to me this morning to dispute the claim:

“Today, James Dobson has suggested Karl Rove said that most of the women on the ‘short list’ asked not to be considered. Karen Williams did no such thing. Her name was in the running up until Miers was selected. She did NOT withdraw her name.”

I don't know. I have about as much to base that 'prediction' on as the people who are believe miers will be a strict constructionist.

Just a feeling. Things aren't going as planned for the white house, and everything they try to do to make it better doesn't work, or makes it worse.

The 'elitist and sexist' spin attempt last week was a horible screw up if they wanted to get those people to support miers.

And it's going to get worse if Miers does withdraw and the president ... and I'd be willing to bet the head of my firstborn that this will be the case ... again fails to nominate somebody on the order of Brown, Owen or Luttig.

Priscilla Owen was already interviewed by Bush and they said it didn't go too well for her?

So either James Dobson lied or Carl Rove lied.

I'll go with Door #2 as the liar.

The White House is falling apart.

Because the Democrats blocked a vote on her nomination to the Federal Court for years and the Rinos did not speak up for
her ?
