He's following "status quo" it seems. In other words, don't rock the boat, just nominate an O'Connor clone and all will be good.
Mr. President, I have supported, voted for, and defended you. But you still seem more concerned about giving your friends jobs than the right people for the job.
Well, at least it wasn't Gonzales...

It is time to vote our consciences, and let the country learn the hard lessons of what liberalism really looks like long term. I believe that happened in '92 and '96.

The Texas Lottery Commission was scandal-plagued. Bush appointed Miers to clean the mess up, which she did.

I believe that DeLay's misfortune raises an opportunity for Republican Senatorial leadership that will challenge Bush's errors.
Uh, how does trouble with Delay affect the Senate?
And for the record, many people here seem to be jumping the gun. A lot of people seem to be operating on assumptions and rumors about Miers. Just calm down and see what happens, ok?

Kay Bailey Hutchinson just said on FNF that she clerked for Sarah Hughes on Federal Court. What do we know about Sarah Hughes?
Why would it matter? Lots of people work for Democrats. That doesn't make them one.

I don't know a lot about her either, but this is from the Political Journal email from the WSJ last week:
"In choosing a replacement for Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court, President Bush may pull a Dick Cheney. The latest speculation centers on White House Counsel Harriet Miers, who is leading the search for a nominee.
Ms. Miers is a Texas attorney and Bush confidante who went to Washington in 2001 and served as staff secretary of the White House and as deputy chief of staff. She succeeded Alberto Gonzales as White House counsel last November. In Texas, Ms. Miers was co-managing partner of a prestigious Dallas law firm and was the first woman to be elected president of the Texas Bar Association. Mr. Bush once called her "a pit bull in size 6 shoes."
Ms. Miers is known for her pro-life views, and if nominated, her confirmation won't be easy. In the early 1990s, she led a fight to get the American Bar Association to reverse its pro-abortion rights policy. She lost."

Personally, I think the most important thing about this nomination is that the President's nominee replace O'Conner as soon as possible. On the issues coming up before the USSC this year, we KNOW that O'Conner will vote against the conservative position. I'm willing to wait a few months and lose these cases if it means for the next 40 years we have a conservative court.

They may be on her resume, but you don't know the FULL story...........you're just seeing a brief bio sketch of her and jumping to conclusions and determinations that may not be IN TOUCH WITH REALITY.
And, no, I don't have any facts; I've already said that; that's why I'm not going insane like the rest of you.

Al Gore apparently was not quite the "Conservative Southern Democrat" in 1988 that some here seem to remember...

She's never been married That's the big warning flag for me. Gotta be something seriously wrong with her." You are kidding, aren't you?
Only a little bit. Just thinking back to the last single nominee, Souter.

Well, when I was young and foolish I did vote for Jimmy Carter and have regretted it ever since.
I'll trust President Bush until he gives me a real reason not to trust him.....when I hired him :) with my vote I hoped and prayed for him to be a leader who would have wisdom on the many important issues facing our country. It's my turn to be wise now and learn more about this nominee before turning my back on the President.

Well for a woman to be unmarried at 60 COULD mean several things:
Lesbian
Too career-driven (which often means liberal)
Just a mean b*tch
Very unattractive
Or...maybe just never met the right guy. It happens.

You're probably right but I could have sworn W said Exodus International, not Ministries; I was on the pc and did an immediate search. Maybe I just heard wrong.I very distinctly heard W say Exodus Ministries, not Exodus International. Oh well, that would have been fun.

I think this talk about her giving money to Al Gore in 1988 is pretty ludicrous. 17 years ago, she gave money to the most conservative (at that time) candidate in the race. Gore was running against Dukakkis and Jesse Jackson at the time. In 1988, many of the conservative democrats had still not left the party. Gore was the most conservative democrat running, pro life, his wife was crusading against filthy music lyrics etc.
Since that point, Ms. Meiers left the dems, has given money to only republicans, and attached herself to the President over a decade ago.
Are we now saying that any person, who was foolish enough to once be a democrat, oh like Phil Gramm, in Texas, can't be kosher? None of us, have a clue about her philosophy. This is a bit of a stealth nomination. If she gave money to Gore in 2000, I would be freaked. But in 1988? Come on folks.
To: dubyaismypresident
Can someone here please tell me ANY indication that Meirs is NOT a strict Constitutionalist?
Because the president, who knows her well, said so?

Expected...She's only cannon fodder to set up the real choice...I take it Y'all don't play much poker....
Could be...Bush is a pretty good poker player. But, if true, I hope they are in it together. I'd hate to be put through the confirmation wringer as part of the play.
