Bush already nominated John Roberts for Sandra Day O'connor's seat and then withdraw the nomination.

Maybe he will do the same with Harriet Miers.

It's funny, the base was busy talking about how the confirmation of Roberts to Chief Justice really preoccupied the Democrats and threw them off balance, when in fact it was the base that was preoccupied and thrown off balance. It's as if we were the ones who got sucker punched.

Hopefully its not too late for us to become engaged now and stop this nomination, before Bush blows it like his father for yet another generation.

Well, I've done some googling around, and I can't find anything at all on Harriet Miers beyond what is posted on this thread. Is she pro-life? Who knows?

One blog site posted a letter written by her, and I must say I was not at all impressed by her writing style. It doesn't say much for her IQ or her clarity of thought.

At best, this is a poor choice, cronyism. At worst, it is a betrayal of Bush's base. I don't look to the congressional hearings to bring anything out about her; these hearings never do. I'm waiting to hear from people who know her, people I can trust. That is, if anyone we can really trust knows her, which is doubtful. She seems to be a small-time Texas political operator.

FoxNews just reported that Harry Reid likes Miers.

"If confirmed, I recognize I will have a tremendous responsibility to keep our judicial system strong and to help insure the court meets their obligations to strictly apply the laws and Constitution," [Miers] said.

This was posted on Drudge via the Washington Post. I take a lot of comfort in that statement. For what it's worth, Schumer is already indicating he will oppose her.

Bush has had her on his list for more than a month, you can bet that.

I'm troubled by a lot of the stuff on this thread, too; for instance, that she's pro-choice, when I just read this:

"During Miers' tenure as head of the Texas Bar Association she was a leader in the campaign to reverse the American Bar Association's pro-choice position on the right to choose. Had this campaign been successful, which it was not, the ABA would have been returned to its former position of neutrality."

He can then withdraw her, and then send Janice Rogers Brown and be percieved as taking the high ground.
Lol... yeah right.

I doubt this is a situation where the rope-a-dope would be used.

More like a "stealth candidate" scenario.

some Freepers will now accuse you of being a "drama queen" and "whining" and a DU spy... blah, blah, blah...

LOL. The new phrase is "Donner Party Conservative." Long on needling and cheerleading, short on substantive dialoge.

And with that comment, I violate my principle of holding my tongue when I feel the urge to utter something inciteful. ;-)

Except it was only withdrawn because the Chief Justice died.

This is worse than READ MY LIPS.

Years from now, when they write about what happened to the Republican Party after they achieved such stunning upsets and established a majority; this event will be seen as the critical moment when conservatives finally washed their hands of the party that they put in power. When they finally understood that their efforts only provided an opportunity to be stabbed in the back.

All your Support-the-President-No-Matter-What people out there - mark my words, this will do more for 'Clinton 43' than anything else. Hillary should send a special note of thanks to Bush.

How fitting. George ("Read My Lips") Bush got us Clinton 41. George ("I Will Nominate Someone Like Scalia") Bush will give us Clinton 43.

From the Home Page of Exodus Ministries......

Exodus House, Inc. was incorporated in the State of Georgia in 1995 with the purpose of providing assistance to the homeless within the inner city of Atlanta Georgia. Exodus House works in conjunction with existing shelters and organizations working in the homeless community. Jose Alvarez, who was a homeless person until 1989, founded the ministry. We are trying to take the testimony of Jesus Christ to give hope to the homeless. We recognize that the homeless are human beings just as we are. We are committed to helping this community any way we can. Charity will only go so far. Our ultimate goal and purpose is empowering people to provide for themselves. This gives them hope for tomorrow and restores dignity.

This is both a CHRISTIAN, and a CONSERVATIVE organization.

I don't know about Miers, but in Texas, like in many areas of Southern states, for years there were a lot of "closet Republicans." Politically and career-wise, it was difficult to be a Republican.

Now there's some great leadership.

She donated to the DNC and ALGORE for President!

In 1988!! At that time she also made contributions to Lloyd Bentson. She might have even made contributions to Phil Gramm while he was still a democrat. Keep in mind that back then, many Texas democrats were more conservative than most northeastern republicans. At the time, also algore was widely considered a "conservative" democrat. This was in the primaries when he was going up against the likes of biden and dukakis.

Was she a "Texas DINO", back when all politicians in the Lone Star State were?

I don't know Miers bona fides, but there were a lot of "DINOs" before Republicans gained control in Texas. It was a political reality.

Of course, I was "Republican before Republican became cool!"

Heh, heh, heh...you'll just have to take my word for it!

He's smarter and more conservative than many of his own "supporters" here give him credit for. When he does something that seems to make no sense to me, I give him the assumption that he's using strategery that I simply don't have enough info to pass judgement on. They play checkers, Dubya plays chess.

I don't have enough faith in that kind of strategery since CFR. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

I will not be fooled twice so I remain extremely skeptical (and disappointed) with this pick.

OK, I'm glad you admit that you are working with the same information as us mere mortals.

Yes, I admitted that; but I also pointed out I'm not jumping to conclusions and spreading falsehoods based on my interpretations of readings of pseudo-facts on this thread.

A claim you cannot make.

What about these few pieces of information available give you any reason to hope that she will be different from O'Connor or Souter?

Because George W. Bush has known her for almost 20 years and he NOMINATED her. DUH.

"FoxNews just reported that Harry Reid likes Miers."

George W. Bush is not a conservative. Never has been. Never will be. Period.

Sorry, some of us have been here a lot longer than you.

So? Why do I get the feeling if I had signed up yesterday, but joined in your hysteria, you wouldn't be bringing up the fact you've been here longer than me?

Some of us have been voting, donating, supporting Republicans for a long, long time - all with the hope that they will finally deliver what they promise. The fact is, their excuses of "not being a majority" and hence the lack of conservative results - is now officially debunked.

By "patience" I did not mean in the teen-age, "I waited for a whole hour for you to pick me up" vein. I meant patient since Goldwater. How long have you been at it?

Well, I've only been doing the same for about 25 years, so you've got me there. I'm simply reserving judgment because I don't know enough about her yet. If you're not willing to do that and that means you need to jump ship, then I guess you'll just do what you have to do to make yourself feel better. I'm willing to be patient and find out more about her before doing anything so drastic.
