Does anyone remember from the hearings what body of people that the Chief Justice apppoints? I don't think it is well known among the public. It seems like it had something to do with investigations or matters of security. I can't remember any of the details. It also seems that a person who brought it up said it surprised him, too, to learn about it.

Had an interesting conversation with him last year on a LOW-FARE flight to Washington. I worked for him in Northern Indiana in the first campaign for Governor, but I told him that the DEM party in Indiana today, is NOT the party it was then.
In some counties, the DEM HQ's didn't even OPEN in 2004, for lack of Candidates and interest, and no one much seemed to care!
I couldn't even bring myself to VOTE for him this time around, and voted a straight ticket for the first time in my life!

I agree on the party situation here. My immediate family used to be Democratic, but we all switched with Reagan. The Democrats of today, regardless of what state, just about, is not the Democratic party of Kennedy. When you read what he felt, you'd think that he was a Republican. Or at least, what I have read. I was only 3 when he was killed. I think that Bayh did some decent things here in Indy, but when he went to DC, he became one of them.
Maybe the Senator was talking about the Tribunals or the
Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Court.
I just really can't remember the details. I do remember the questioner stating he was surprised. Of course, maybe I am experience temporary senility.

So Boxer says AQ wasn't in Iraq before the war?
If AQ wasn't in Iraq prior to the war, how come the War Resolution specifically states they were in Iraq. This was signed in 2002!
For some time now, Congressional Democrats have complained that the war in Iraq has drawn Al Qaeda to the region and that the jihadists were not in Iraq prior to the war.
This position is at odds with the Democrat's own words in 2002 when they demanded that an Iraqi war resolution be written and passed by Congress which specifically stated that Al Qaeda jihadists were known to be in Iraq.
Every major Democrat of note signed the War Resolution below which states the exact opposite of what they are now complaining about.
This is what the War Resolution states:
"Whereas member of al Qaida, an organization bearing responsibility for attacks on the United States, its citizens and interests, including the attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001, are known to be in Iraq; Iraq continues to aid and harbor other international terrorist organizations, including organizations that threaten the lives and safety of United States citizens; the attacks on the United States of America on September 11, 2001 underscored the gravity of the threat posted by the acquisition of weapons of mass destruction by international terrorists organizations; we the undersigned, etc.

However, he does hold several additional powers, both practical and ceremonial, the most important of which is the ability to choose which justice will write an opinion when the chief votes with the majority. This is particularly important because the chief justice can shape precedent by joining with the majority, when he might have voted otherwise.
"The chief justice selects judges to serve on various judicial committees, including the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, often called the “wiretap court.” Beyond that, the chief justice holds a variety of other duties, including presiding at impeachment hearings, swearing in the President, and chairing the Judicial Conference of the United States, the top administrative body of the federal court system."

and I see Sen. STevens on the floor, saying that work on the defense bill is halted because of a "procedural debate"...does anyone know anything about that?
See what is happening, these bills get held up like this..then time starts running out in the fiscal year..and before Holiday breaks...so they end up with the biggest pork-laden OMNIBUS BILL....we have seen...and there is no way to got through it and figure out what is going on.

I think, that all things considered...with all of the wrath that is being heaped on President Bush...and just about any Republican that opens their mouths, these days...
that President Bush has NOTHING to lose, by nominating the very BEST person for the job....ethnicity, sex, and ultra-conservativness, be damned....
The MEDIA and dems won't come down any harder that they are now...so Bush needs to let them know how much he "worries" about their opinion of him and his choice.
