The thing is, Levin doesn't need cover. He's not up any time soon and Michigan sends him to the Senate by large margins. It's Stabenow who needed cover and she voted no.

Levin's looking for cover so he can sound reasonable when he supports a filibuster against the next nominee. He may well be retiring in 2008 anyway, so it's not cover for the election--besides, if he runs in 2008 he'll win.

Stabenow had to balance upsetting people who think Roberts is a good choice against upsetting the leftist blogosphere, which may help her raise money.

ATTENTION ALL LIBERALS:

You now have a white, male, heterosexual, Catholic, middle class, middle age Chief Justice of the United States. Try to deal with it!

I think the Levin and Bayh votes were more surprising than jumpin' Jim.

Just about the only surprise here, for me, is Jumpin'Jim's "yes" vote.

He has Alzheimer's...he probably thought he voted no.

I just took this SCOTUS quiz (linked from NRO) where based on your answers it returns your ideal candidate.

My input returned: JUDGE CONSUELO CALLAHAN

Who the heck is that????

I don't think the result of this vote will have any political consequences for anyone.

The next USSC justice vote will override, overshadow, obliterate in every way, this one.
