The thing is, Levin doesn't need cover. He's not up any time soon and Michigan sends him to the Senate by large margins. It's Stabenow who needed cover and she voted no.Levin's looking for cover so he can sound reasonable when he supports a filibuster against the next nominee. He may well be retiring in 2008 anyway, so it's not cover for the election--besides, if he runs in 2008 he'll win.
Stabenow had to balance upsetting people who think Roberts is a good choice against upsetting the leftist blogosphere, which may help her raise money.

His butler probably had a hard time tying JF's ascot today.Swollen head. Was it a purple ascot?

Just about the only surprise here, for me, is Jumpin'Jim's "yes" vote.He has Alzheimer's...he probably thought he voted no.
To: mhking
That was a fast vote.
I thought they'd drag it out at leat an hour.

I don't think the result of this vote will have any political consequences for anyone.
The next USSC justice vote will override, overshadow, obliterate in every way, this one.
