Located at the mouth of Mississippi River, the Port of New Orleans is Americas gateway to the global market. New Orleans has been a center for international trade since 1718.
Today, the Port of New Orleans is at the center of the worlds busiest port complex Louisianas Lower Mississippi River. Its proximity to the American Midwest via a 14,500-mile inland waterway system makes New Orleans the port of choice for the movement of cargoes such as steel, grain, containers and manufactured goods.
The Port of New Orleans is the only deepwater port in the United States served by six class one railroads. This gives port users direct and economical rail service to or from anywhere in the country.
New Orleans is one of Americas leading general cargo ports. A productive and efficient private maritime industry has help produce impressive results, including the USAs top market share for import steel, natural rubber, plywood and coffee.
In the last 10 years, the Port of New Orleans has invested more than $400 million in new state-of-the-art facilities. Improved breakbulk and container terminals feature new multipurpose cranes, expanded marshalling yards and a new roadway to handle truck traffic.
Maritime activity within the Port of New Orleans is responsible for more than 107,000 jobs, $2 billion in earnings, $13 billion in spending and $231 million in taxes statewide.
The Port of New Orleans has also been a defined area where foreign merchandise gets brought into the country without being immediately subject to the usual U.S. Customs regulations!!!
That is sad.
I'm sure once all the investigations are complete and heads are rolling....The training will be back up to mark.
Thanks for the insight.
Yeah yeah yeah, and Spiderman can beat up Superman. You are not only a jerk, you are just flat out weird.
So let's see if I have it straight, Mr. Let's-nuke-Jerusalem-and-see-how-you-like-it: I'm a jerk because I believe that a socialistic redistribution of $200 billion of our money is immoral and unconstitutional. I'm "flat out weird" because I believe in God. That about sum it up?
(Hint: being a socialist atheist makes you rather "jerky" and "weird" in the eyes of most of us here.)

Well, noob, I am glad that you have your finger firmly on the pulse of Free Republic.
Man, you are bizarre... to the point of fascinating. It's not that I think you've lost it as much as I believe you never had it.
If you're arguing with me, you're advocating the $200 billion rebuilding of NO, because I've done nothing on this thread except state that it's immoral and unconstitutional to do so. Specifically, when I said,
Why the hell are we paying $200 billion to rebuild a tourist trap...
You replied, enraged, telling me finally to STFU. Apparently you believe that the fine cuisine there does justify the $200 bil, is the only thing I can make of your rather vehement reply.
Well, noob, I am glad that you have your finger firmly on the pulse of Free Republic.
Meaning, that I've gone out on a limb and suggested that it's full of people who are both religious and, ahem, the opposite of socialist? Yeah, that really takes an amazing kreskin to figure out. People come here all the time expecting good old-fashioned Marxist revival meetings, and they're SO surprised when they don't find them...
....."spend the taxpayer money upstream at Baton Rouge, abandon NOLA and let the river find it's natural course.
"........
Good idea.
Go to google earth, and check out the land on the river south of BR. As the river meanders south, there's lots of farm land, that could be bought up, bulldozed with the spoils to create levees around a new major port. Reroute the railroads to service this new worldclass port, dredge the river south if need be, and buy up more of the farmland to create port worker housing.
Let the high-ground in NOLA become a paradise for the gay and debauched fringe society, with hotels on high ground, queer bars, tittie joints, the superdome and casinos, with new housing surrounding the small city to support the pimps, ho's, casino dealers, etc.
Okay. I was about to say, "What did I do?"
If you want a Google GMail account, FReepmail me.
They're going fast!
That's true, but in particular there seem to be some tremendously inflamed emotions about New Orleans. Some folks appear to be so powerfully engaged with the city that they readily endorse a massive federal project to rebuild it, and become extremely upset at anyone with a different viewpoint.
You said: "The only good thing in NO was jazz."
Which anyone who has been to New Orleans and bothered to step out of the hotel or off of Bourbon Street can tell you is patently false and shortsighted.
I then illustrated said shortsighted falsehood by continuing your sentence with:"...and the food, and the museums, and the history, and the architecture, and the industry.
...and then, yes, I asked you to shut up. I was hoping to spare you the continued embarrasment of speaking from outside of your knowledge.
At no point did I mention that I thought your magical 200 billion dollar figure SHOULD be spent on New Orleans. At no point did you bother ask me if I believed that it should be spent on New Orleans before attacking me FOR BELIEVEING that it should.
Then again, why would you ask anyone anything... it's obvious that you are just here to hear yourself talk.
At which point you attacked like a scalded cobra.
Which anyone who has been to New Orleans and bothered to step out of the hotel or off of Bourbon Street can tell you is patently false and shortsighted.
I reply that anyone who knows how to read knows when someone's tongue is in their cheek. My consistent point has been that federal expenditure to rebuild the place is an abomination. The reason is moral and constitutional; it would be just as wrong to rebuild Saybrook CT, even though it's the Shining Jewel of the Universe(TM).
However, I did offer a few rhetorical arguments against rebuilding New Orleans specifically, and the main one is: why in the world would we be so eager to re-create the city whose murder rate was ten times the national average? Even if the food is awesome?
While you ponder that question, here's some beads--lets see them boobies o' yours.
...and then, yes, I asked you to shut up.
You told me to shut the eff up. Your description makes it sound so nearly... courteous. Then, because you have a gift for irony, you called me a "jerk".
You know what the problem is don't you? Too many people think New Orleans is only the French Quarter and Mardi Gras. They don't realize it's one of our few deep water ports and the 5th largest port in the world.
They don't realize it's not just petroleum but also steel, gypsum, exports from states which border the Missississippi and so much more.
All they know of New Orleans is the latest Girls Gone Wild video. Besides, if it isn't their city that's devastated why should they be concerned it it gets rebuilt or not. They don't have a clue the economy of the Gulf Coast affects the whole of the United States.
I wouldn't want the feds to rebuild Pittsburgh, either. Why is it that conservatives suddenly find themselves all for such an incredibly extravagant expenditure that violates the tenth amendment?
300 Billion pissed away in Iraq.
Countless billions in aid to countries overseas.
And you spout shibboleths to let the devastated part of the country be devastated.
No. Rebuild. The President was on the money.
The obscenity is those who don't want to rebuild.
AS MUCH MONEY AS IT TAKES.
In fact, stop all overseas aid if that's what it takes.
If you're against it, I can understand what you're saying. It does at least have the cloak of constitutionality, if you buy the construal of the WoT as "common defense".
Countless billions in aid to countries overseas.
And every penny of it unconstitutional.
The obscenity is those who don't want to rebuild. AS MUCH MONEY AS IT TAKES.
Put your money where your mouth is. Cough up two billion yourself. Or, as much money as you have in this earth. Hopefully, others will follow your example. But for some reason, your high-minded moralism doesn't involve personal sacrifice; you merely advocate that someone else be expropriated to do your idea of a good deed.
In fact, stop all overseas aid if that's what it takes.
Stop the foreign aid and don't rebuild NO. When the economy gets glowing like a furnace, everyone affected by the storm will be on their feet in no time.
Thank God your moronic rantings are irrelevant.
The President has made his promise.
I believe he will rebuild.
Hey, toots, it's our tax money that will rebuild the area.
So, you stop your high handed moralizing. Cough up two billion myself - hell, give me access to the Fed printing presses and I'll raise you a few zeroes after that two billion.
Don't rebuild NO? THE BEST CITY IN AMERICA.
Somehow I cannot envision Americans not wanting to rebuild that grand, decayed, glorious city.
Tell you what, after it's rebuilt, don't visit.
They won't miss you.
I do not believe in using federal funds to rebuild the flawed parts of a flawed city either. You never bothered to find that out. It's not about rebuilding New Orleans for me right now. I'm still mourning a place that I came to love like a family member... because I took the time to fall in love with it... unlike the unwashed and uncivilized millions who came to throw beads, flash boobs and puke in the gutter.
I have a fundamental problem with buffoons pissing on the memory of a place that they never visited or never bothered to know. Keep your bliss in ignorance. I give.
>>buffoons pissing on the memory of a place that they never visited or never bothered to know.
GRRRR!
It doesn't matter. Bush has laid his reputation and credibility on the line in this effort.
Now, if we can only change the WTC rebuilding to be higher than the original.
And I am, and have been, talking about nothing else. So this conversation apparently doesn't exist. Have a nice day.
I have a fundamental problem with buffoons pissing on the memory of a place that they never visited or never bothered to know.
You are perfectly free to love the place, despite its rampant corruption, high crime rates, poverty, moral decadence and all the rest of it. Love it all you want. Rebuild it, even. As long as you don't try to use tax dollars to do it, you can do anything your heart desires, and I've no quarrel with you at all.
Too many people really don't have a clue about the city. It's so much more than the French Quarter and Bourbon Street and inner city ghettos.
