President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

I am perplexed about the number of people in the conv center,,I initially heard 3000 and now hearing multiples of that. Does anyone know?

In a word, no. Geraldo had the NOLA Police Chief with him, and the Police Chief said 30,000 (thirty thousand). The Police Chief also wants transportation OUT, and may be exaggerating in hopes it causes a quicker reaction.

I have no cable here so I can only base my opinions from what I see written here.

This is a hellish situation.

The reporters are/have seen much more than they will ever put on air.

These two (from accounts on this thread) appear to have developed some human emotions despite being reporters.

I personally have more sympathy towards Shep because he has been there longer and actually experienced the hurricane and it's aftermath rather than being flown in afterwards.

However I also have sympathy for G (can't spell it sorry lol) as a parent. Were I to go down there this minute I would probably be in tears the moment I saw a child ( I however would be doing all in my power to help amidst wiping my tears away.

Conclusion: Reporters are human. They are not perfect. Humans lose controll of their emotions in extreem circumstances. And the problem here is what exactly?

People forget that the stinch in that convention center is overwhelming...Those complaining that Geraldo is a drama king should think if they have children, how would the feel if their baby was exposed to who knows what.

Is anyone watching this guy? He took a schoolbus and started picking people up. He picked up the elderly, people passing out, etc., gave them water, etc. Never drove a bus, just took his chances. The people all donated money and bought gas. He's in Houston and they are all alive. The bus is parked at the Astrodome in Houston.

His quote: "I love them and I am glad they made it."

you don't think the DNC is capable of this? they are. now that doesn't mean it happened, but don't dismiss it as tin-foil so quickly. look at her actions, can it all be incompetence? look at the systematic move by the media against Bush today. that just doesn't "happen" on its own, the left is well organized.

Pastor, scroll back to earlier in this thread and you will see pictures of pallets of food and water stacked outside the Convention Center. Those pictures were taken today. Geraldo is a nutcase. He always has been. He is the Jerry Springer of the media.

That's a flat out lie. Everyone there has talked about seeing people collapsing or laying in a stupor or dying.

Can't believe how some are minimizing a disaster that is ongoing before our eyes. Stating the truth is blaming, but apparently some feel theatened by honesty and human compassion. I don't want a robot reporting.

okay okay, I am backing off.

I adore Texas. My grandchildren are Texans, I worship at the big star on my daughter's den wall. I have cowboy boots bought in Texas.

Am I off the Texas S--t list?

I hate to say it, but I've thought that for some time.
Landrieu's papa was mayor of NO for a long time, her brother is the current Lt. Gov.
She was down there on Monday or Tuesday demanding more money than 9/11.
In the meantime, everyone's bugging at the mayor, and he doesn't have the resources, so he calls the state.
She blows him off (or lies to him or backs him off - he did stump for Bush and Rindahl, the current Gov.'s challenger) to make the situation worse and lay it at the feet of him and W.
He's laid-back attitude made me realize something was up, and then it outburst on the radio.
He's a smart man - he's going to tell the truth, and the Governor and who knows else is going to fry for it.

We'll have to disagree on everything since I will admit I do not know the extent of the obstacles they face, I have no experience in this type of massive operation, and will NOT critisize the areas experts choose to evacuate first because of it.

FEMA doesn't give a crap about that.

FEMA is the ones giving the orders for this evac. They count them off, try to keep the families together as best they can, and ship them out.
