President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

You're absolutely correct. Yet as we can see from this discussion- because of their inability to get a grip before going on camera and letting the STORY tell itself through them- they have BECOME the story.

Which is why Jungle Jim Cantore pulled himself (or was pulled) out of Gulfport earlier this week.

Media is fueling that crap.
They should have stuck with the brave folks who stood in line for hours at the Superdome with all their belongings in a plastic bag.
I agree with you, though.
I have a friend whose daughter is in the service.
She is not only a victim, but the troops are being trashed again at the same time.
Not good.

I wouldn't be surprised if the riots start in Los Angeles...there have been a bunch of disturbances this week, due to the "community leaders" saying the city will burn.

Yes, just like the 60's - deja vu all over again.

When you bite the hand that feeds you be prepared to get hit with a fist. People are breaking their damned backs to help a large group of ABLE BODIED ADULTS, that have the same survival skills of infants.

So because Shep won't starve himself, he's bad?

Whoa, Shep now claiming people are LOCKED in the convention center. Police set up roadblocks to keep people from leaving NO. That can't be true.

Sounds like Shep is on a hearsay rampage. Better pull him out, he's shell-shocked.

I certainly wouldn't want to be a white woman in the superdome or the convention center. This story doesn't surprise me. I could see the men telling these people this just to scare the hell out of them and never intending to kill them. It is also possible they know that lawlesness reigns and Let's Kill Whitey.

Exactly, bottom line we are down to basics here: Water, Food and information.

Hannity was trying to say that the 10K people were sent to TX today, and they have food and water. The thing is - those were the people they already were helping and have control over- what have they done to all those people standing outside the Dome, and Convention Ctr who thought that was where they could go for help.

So many head should roll for this, and I can't believe George Bush can watch this and not be sick and angry about it.

Last I heard, Mayor and Governor are in Baton Rouge. There is a report or a rumor that the mayor evacuated his family via helicopter, on Friday.

"Bastardi clearly stated "they did not dodge a bullet" and then he explained for the thousandth time that raising pressue by 4 mb and pulling to the east does not mean everyone should stay.
Hell, the entire thread on FR that morning would have put TWC to shame it was so scientific."

True, but irrelevant. The people in New Orleans didn't have any power. They weren't watching Bastardi, or logging into Free Republic. They thought they dodged the bullet.

Shep has lost it..he has oin-air Stockholm syndrome. Iti's understandable..but he should be given a 24 hr R&R.

It's horribly irresponsible and cruel to Shep to leave him in there. It's like a brave officer or non-com who's done a great job but has had it -- don't let everyone see a brave man melt down when he's pushed past his limit. Fox Executives need to step in NOW!!

They were told to go there.

Most of us who were watching the highway cams on storm weekend could see that the roads never got really got backed up until the last minute

I remember reading those comments on FR and being totally flabbergasted that the highways were clear after it was obvious that evacuation was the only sane response.
Sure a lot of folks couldn't leave; any number of reasons, more or less valid. But with half a million people warned, the roads should have been jammed by early Sunday morning. And by Sunday dinnertime the roads should have been all one way: outbound.

The figure given, 80 percent of NO evacuated, does sound suspicious.
