Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

'close' will suffice
Which is why Jungle Jim Cantore pulled himself (or was pulled) out of Gulfport earlier this week.
Media is fueling that crap.
They should have stuck with the brave folks who stood in line for hours at the Superdome with all their belongings in a plastic bag.
I agree with you, though.
I have a friend whose daughter is in the service.
She is not only a victim, but the troops are being trashed again at the same time.
Not good.
Yes, just like the 60's - deja vu all over again.
When you bite the hand that feeds you be prepared to get hit with a fist. People are breaking their damned backs to help a large group of ABLE BODIED ADULTS, that have the same survival skills of infants.
So because Shep won't starve himself, he's bad?
The same Whooooaaaa Steve Harrigan that Freepers were talking about 5 days ago with disdain?
Sounds like Shep is on a hearsay rampage. Better pull him out, he's shell-shocked.
Sure I will...
when the criticism of those in the actually area of the disaster stop.
When they stop, I will. That simple.

>>>The main responsibility and authority for operational aspects of evacuation in Orleans Parish lies with the Office of Emergency Preparedness (OEP) within the Chief Administrative Office of the City. The authority to make the final decisions related to an evacuation rests with the Mayor of New Orleans.
Office of Emergency Preparedness: http://www.neworleanscert.org
OEP Mission Statement The Office of Emergency Preparedness is responsible for the response and coordination of those actions needed to protect the lives and property of its citizens from natural or man-made disasters as well as emergency planning for the City of New Orleans. We coordinate all city departments and allied state and federal agencies which respond to city-wide disasters and emergencies through the development and constant updating of an integrated multi-hazard plan. All requests for federal disaster assistance and federal funding subsequent to disaster declarations are also made through this office. Our authority is defined by the Louisiana Emergency Assistance and Disaster Act of 1993, Chapter 6 Section 709, Paragraph B:

I certainly wouldn't want to be a white woman in the superdome or the convention center. This story doesn't surprise me. I could see the men telling these people this just to scare the hell out of them and never intending to kill them. It is also possible they know that lawlesness reigns and Let's Kill Whitey.
Hannity was trying to say that the 10K people were sent to TX today, and they have food and water. The thing is - those were the people they already were helping and have control over- what have they done to all those people standing outside the Dome, and Convention Ctr who thought that was where they could go for help.
So many head should roll for this, and I can't believe George Bush can watch this and not be sick and angry about it.
Last I heard, Mayor and Governor are in Baton Rouge. There is a report or a rumor that the mayor evacuated his family via helicopter, on Friday.
"Bastardi clearly stated "they did not dodge a bullet" and then he explained for the thousandth time that raising pressue by 4 mb and pulling to the east does not mean everyone should stay.
Hell, the entire thread on FR that morning would have put TWC to shame it was so scientific."
True, but irrelevant. The people in New Orleans didn't have any power. They weren't watching Bastardi, or logging into Free Republic. They thought they dodged the bullet.
It's horribly irresponsible and cruel to Shep to leave him in there. It's like a brave officer or non-com who's done a great job but has had it -- don't let everyone see a brave man melt down when he's pushed past his limit. Fox Executives need to step in NOW!!
Anybody on the scanner???
What is the sutuation they are waiting for the NG commander to decide?
They were told to go there.
I remember reading those comments on FR and being totally flabbergasted that the highways were clear after it was obvious that evacuation was the only sane response.
Sure a lot of folks couldn't leave; any number of reasons, more or less valid. But with half a million people warned, the roads should have been jammed by early Sunday morning. And by Sunday dinnertime the roads should have been all one way: outbound.
The figure given, 80 percent of NO evacuated, does sound suspicious.
You didn't get the implant at the last RNC?
*Tisk!*
WHY DIDN'T YOU DEPLOY THE BUSES DURING THE MANDATORY EVACUATION, MAYOR?...
