President Bush continues to assess the catastrophic damage by air and on the ground in Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. Bush spent the day meeting with search and rescue personnel, relief commanders, and displaced residents in Mobile, Biloxi, and the New Orleans area. U.S. Congress passed a $10.5 billion relief package for the hurricane ravaged areas. First Lady Laura Bush issued a press statement from an evacuation shelter in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Patient and staff evacuations continue from numerous New Orleans Hospitals. Thousands of patients are being airlifted to a field hospital at Louis Armstrong New Orleans Airport for triage, staging, and transport to hospitals throughout the United States.

The U.S. Coast Guard and civilian volunteers continue to evacuate thousands of survivors from their flooded homes in New Orleans. The Army Corps of Engineers continues work to repair the damaged levees.

The nation's airlines today began an operation intended to fly up to 25,000 refugees out of New Orleans. The airlines are volunteering their aircraft and crews for the program. Long convoys loaded with relief supplies arrived throughout the day into New Orleans, while convoys of buses are moving survivors out of the city.

Several large fires are burning in the city and greater New Orleans area. Reports indicate snipers are holding down firefighters. Reports of shots fired with LEO down in the St. Bernard Parish area. Rescue operations are underway. A bus carrying NOLA evauees rolled over in Opelousa, LA.

WDSU-TV New Orleans - The news staff has started to return to temporary news studios near New Orleans. However, expect evening coverage from Hearst-Argyle sister stations WAPT Jackson and WESH Orlando when the New Orleans staff needs to take a break.

WGNO-TV New Orleans - New Orleans' ABC affiliate has returned to the air with WBRZ-TV and launched video streaming with continuous Katrina coverage.

WPMI-TV Mobile, AL - WPMI is webcasting from 5:30am - 10:30pm CDT. When off air, you can view pre-recorded reports on demand. This feed is often unreliable.

WKRG-TV Mobile, AL - This station is providing good coverage of the situation to the east in Mississippi and Alabama. However, the station is now signing off at around 10:30pm CDT like WWL and WPMI.

WJTV-TV Jackson, MS - The CBS affiliate in Jackson is providing live coverage for both the Jackson area and south Mississippi (knowing a lot of media in that area is off the air).

United Radio From New Orleans: WWL-AM, WNOE-FM, "KISS-FM," WRNO-FM, WYLD-FM, and WJBO-AM who have joined forces as United Radio From New Orleans, and they are streaming.

There were 3 or 4 threads here about that today, but they were all pulled. The information wasn't sourced.

Would there be a reason government officials would not want the feds in NO? Could there be secrets which may be discovered?

I doubt that

IMHO .. I think they were just in over their heads and didn't have a clue of what to do or how to give an order

Many of the NO and LA Officials LACKED Leadership

FOX is NOT the favorite network of most here. It's just the more tolerant given the choices. FOX has been bashed quite often, so don't dare say the critisism is motivated because they aren't saying what we want to hear.

Dude, that's not fair. Look at other replies to my post. It does seem RC has set up many, many shelters in LA. The Governor and local law enforcement have simply told RC to not come into NO.

BTW, I never give a dime to the Salvation Army. I have SERIOUS religious objections to doing so.

On the next thread, can you list the Southern Baptists as a charity to contribute to? They are having some success in helping folks. They are very experienced at getting into bad situations and making them better with their disaster relief units. It's at namb.net

even then...

as I said, I really wonder how some of these National Gaurdsmen are going to come out of it.

Strong as usual I hope, but this is a disaster that is going to linger for years here people.

As I said, Geraldo was probably going to get through the segment until he picked up that baby.

Shep needs to get out of there. Not only is he probably going to get sick, but his emotions are both raw and taking over.

I am going to give them a break on this, but FNC needs to get either some fresh blood in there, or just get their guys out altogether.

Would you feel better if you learned that a MAJOR oil company had their primary hub pinched back to only 30% flowrate ON PURPOSE before this storm hit?

Which company and which hub? If it's because they had shut off the Gulf wells or because Katrina was bearing on down, I can't exactly fault them.

How's this for outrageous - up here in Wisconsin, the gas stations have to charge at least the HIGHER of 6% above invoice (what they paid for what's in their tanks) or 9.18% above the average wholesale price. And the DemonRAT governor, who sees nothing really wrong about that, and who has just diverted hundreds of millions of gas tax dollars (mind you, we're paying over 32 cents/gallon in state gas taxes) to his buddies in the teachers union, is blaming President Bush for the high gas prices.

" Prayers for your friend's family and brother. I pray that they get the relief they need, and that meanwhile they are given the physical strength and stamina, and faith & hope, sufficient to keep them going."

Thanks for the kind words. I'll pass on to her that perfect strangers are remembering her family in their prayers-she will be touched.

It's obvious what's happening - the Guard is setting up a cordon around the city to isolate the violence and chaos.

* bump * to your post ...

Absent the lawlessness and looting this kind of cordon & secure approach wouldn't have been needed and relief efforts would have been a lot faster.

Hope this isn't way off topic. I don't think it is. Lately I've been wondering what I would do if something happened here. Well Mich only has Great Lakes but if our elec went out for days...

Is there any internet that would work? Anywhere? Because I would go without TV but not FR...Any new tech?

If you don't know how to use one, or you are a small female, I would not recommend it.
I would advise you to try and partner up with someone who is capable. I know that sounds stupid (trying to find a partner), but you could get hurt.
I'm a female, I know how to use a weapon because I was taught beforehand.

"The first people the national guard should forcibly evacuate are the press"

I was praying today that Pres. Bush would request a one-to-one mtg. with that Nagin and one way or another take him entirely out of the loop. The busses stranded in water is all I need to see to know he should be evacuated and imprisoned and held for trial later.
