So, Bush should have know that looters would be shooting at helicopters?

Who is "anybody?" Who is "we?"

Who's in charge? What single person is in charge of this thing?

No single person is in charge. Any person with a gun is in charge of anything he can hit with it, as long as he has ammo.

This is a huge mistake, he has no reason to be there, it will draw a number of needed security personnel away from where they are needed most, its a PR stunt, and a bad one, he ought to send his own helicopter in for search and rescue. One of the many things I can't stand about Bush is that he learned a lot from Bill Clinton when it comes to photo ops. It's style over substance, baby!

Governors of the affected states REQUESTED the President come to their states to view the damage. What was he supposed to do, REFUSE THEM?

Did you notice that most of the Bush and Republican bashers on FR are registered as members either in 1998 or 2004? Why those two years, I do not know.

But this has become a federalized operation with Homeland Security involved.

And they've failed, imo. I think the president thinks they have failed too.

That's the problem. There's lots of people and agencies "involved." Nobody's in charge. If Bush doesn't get control of this thing, the country is going to conclude that HE has failed.

Actually there are no shelters in NO proper. That's why they called the SD the refuge of last resort. Whoever told those folks to go to the Convention Center was acting on their own. And it seems to me it would be up to the local authorities to tell the FEMA guy where the shelters are.

Get Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson down there calm down the populace.

LOL, this ranks as the dumbest remark on the issue to date. Congratulations.

This event is a case study in the necessity of the second ammendment.

Bump for truth

Almost every major urban area in this country is one disaster away from this calamity, and it is because of the content of their character, or rather the lack thereof, rather than any race, religion, or ethnic background.

It's hard to understand how people can have such short memories and still be able to clothe and feed themselves. ><

Anyone ever explain to you how our system of government works, about federalism, the Consitution, things like that?
How cities and states are responsible for policing themselves, and how the federal government is responsible for national security and other national issues?

Naw, I didn't think so.

Nobody slaps 'em down like an ex-president. I hope GHWB speaks up soon. GWB is too fine a man sometimes, too fine for politics. Won't defend himself against the most outrageous smears.
Landrieu was beating the drum here moment Katrina touched down. Democrats everywhere are now romping and stomping to the rhythm. God knows what they'll be saying in the Senate shortly.
They are looting the political capital, and someone has to speak up with authority.

The thugs are preventing a lot of air drops, or when water has been trucked in , they evidently take over the supply.

I did hear that one helicopter tried to land on a hospital with supplies but was chased off by an armed mob trying to commandeer the helicopter.

I wish one reporter would ask these "poor black folk" about what they did prior to the storm to evacuate or prepare for it. I feel more for the tourists who shelled out $25,000 for bus transportation, only to have those buses commandeered and were told to walk to the dome.

Nobody should be condemned to die of dehydration because they made a dumb mistake. Not if something can be done about it.

The "coulda, shoulda" game is for later.

I never advocated otherwise..I'm in favor of eliminating FEMA and returning the costs to taxpayers...

Please do not confuse the issue with the fact that BUSH declared a state of emergency 2 days before the storm hit. I mean BUSH/Rove have a crystal ball and knew the levees were going to break well after the Hurricane was over and the celebratory drinking began in the French Quarter.

All of the people who are peeved at BUSH for various reasons need to vent their frustration because they are overwhelmed by panic. ;)

"Am I right that those 600 MPs were being sent to the convention center site to secure it for aid deployment?"

Sadly, yes. They're going to protect the rescue workers trying to get in from the animals ruling the streets.

They didn't need a quorem, they did pass the bill to provide billions of aid to the storm area.

Exactly.

The guy on BOR said last night, I think (I didn't watch, this is secondhand from someone who did watch) that the adminstration official said that only Congress could declare martial law. They didn't do that last night as far as I know.

And give me a second and you'll have freepmail.
