President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Shep's mad because the body is in his parking space.

Updates as they come in on Katrina

02:05 PM CDT on Thursday, September 1, 2005

Tom Planchet

2:04 P.M. - (AP) Fights and trash fires broke out, rescue helicopters were shot at and anger mounted across New Orleans on Thursday, as National Guardsmen poured in to help restore order across this increasingly desperate and lawless city.

"We are out here like pure animals. We don't have help," the Rev. Issac Clark, 68, said outside the New Orleans Convention Center, where corpses lay in the open and he and other evacuees complained that they were dropped off and given nothing -- no food, no water, no medicine.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the government is sending in 1,400 National Guardsmen to help stop looting and other lawlessnes in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

I'd love to carpool, but everyone I know is in the same shape I'm in. Anyone who has any gas at all is hoarding it for an emergency. I'm doing the same with the gas in the lawnmower. Mississippi is very rural and unless you live inside the City of Jackson, there is no public transportation in the metro area.

I would suspect there are quite a few strung out drug addicts that have been cut off from their suppliers.

Undoubtedly. Did you see the reference upthread to the guy searched (I forget whether it was in Baton Rouge or TX) and had a pound of cocaine on him?

Chance to do what? To look reassuring? I'll agree with you on that.

But surely you'd agree that it is easier to look reassuring in the face of disaster when the vast majority of your city is actually functioning. That ain't the case here.

I'm not saying Nagin is doing everything he can. But he may be. There is a complete breakdown of every aspect of services in that town - both public and private. Nothing, neither public nor private, is working in NO at this time. Do you really think that any amount of reassurance would make that different?

Don't be so cynical. I have friends and family that have contributed over there and know that their neighboors did so as well.

That's what we went through in 1973. Then they went to alternating days to fill up -- based on the last digit in your license place odd and even; solved some of the line problems.

"Someone PLEASE beat him senseless!?"

Why, I have people around me telling me that things down in NO must not be so bad because there are not many dead bodies.

I really think most of non-internet America have no clue how bad it is down there. Maybe we need better visuals so those less-informed citizens can finally get-it.

I empathize for you, but this is a disaster. There is no reason to expect gasoline deliveries to your door. If you call your employer I'm sure they would understand. I assume most other employees live near you and are in the same situation. Buck up and strap your gas can to a bike and get some excercise.

Um... They've been doing that since late Tuesday.

The media isn't providing a full picture.

He ended the story by saying whether or not new orleans could be rebuilt was for future reports but for today NO is dead.

Shep is wrong NO is not dead.....she is on her knees right now...its OUR JOB to get her back on her feet. Last time I checked NO is a city in the greatest nation on earth.

Let's stop the whining and see what we all can do to get NO back on its feet.
