Governor says entire city (New Orleans) needs to be evacuated

With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that everyone still in the city, now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers, needs to be evacuated.

"The situation is untenable," Blanco said, pausing to choke back tears at a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

The breach of two levees Tuesday meant the city was rapidly filling with water and the prospect of having power was a long time off, the governor said. She said the storm also severed a major water main, leaving the city without drinkable water.

"The goal is to bring enough supplies to sustain the people until we can establish a network to get them out," Blanco said.

FEMA is considering putting people on cruise ships, in tent cities, mobile home parks, or so-called floating dormitories, boats FEMA normally uses to house its own employees, said Coordinating Director Bill Lokey.

"I don't see how they are going to empty an entire city"

They previously said that 80% of the residents had already left before the storm.

Cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good,
Now, cryin' won't help you, prayin' won't do you no good,
When the levee breaks, mama, you got to move.
All last night sat on the levee and moaned,
All last night sat on the levee and moaned,
Thinkin' 'bout me baby and my happy home

And the Bush bashing is already starting, like he told them to stay or something.

I read about the wackos over at DU claiming that Bush had 4 years to prevent these types of natural disasters and did nothing.  They also claimed that the military is able to manipulate the weather and this was all timed to take the MSM away from Cindy.

I wish they were kidding but they were not.  The people over at DU need some serious help.

I think this was all on a thread that pookie18 posted at FR today.  Unbelievable stuff.

First of all, I did not elect Bill Clinton. Second, I lived quite nicely through his terms, because for all practical purposes he became a lame duck after Newt Gingrich cleaned his clock in the elections of 1994. Once that moron Clinton lost the House, he was done as far as legislation was concerned. Then in 1998, he shot himself in the foot with his little cheesecake Monica Lewinsky, and in effect ended his Presidency. At the end of the day, I just want to totally destroy the Democrat Party and anyone in it at the voting booth. Why? Because they want to destroy America and everything good that she stands for!!! End of story! And....yes I have responded to Fluxcapacitor's post. Of course, if you wish to label me as a monster, that's just peachy with me.

----I only have this to say. Elections matter, and they have consquences!!! Ms. Blanco and the Mayor of New Orleans are neither leaders or accountable!!! The only people to blame are the voters that put them there IMHO. End of story!!! I take this hard line because if our country is to survive, we must become hardened, strong, determined and focused. We are not that way now, thanks to the liberal Democrat vermin that are destroying our country.----

I see! Survival of the fittest and the thinning of the weak! Make a bad choice on Election Day, and you deserve to have your property, possessions, livelihood, and maybe even your life destroyed by an ACT OF GOD! After all, isn't compassion a hindrance to the raw strength America needs to survive?

Well, sir, if elections really do matter THAT much, then let's look at it this way: your state came within 537 votes of putting Al Gore in the WHITE HOUSE. It remained in play for the Democrats the next time around, which could not be said Louisiana. And it's going to be in play for the Dems in Presidential elections for the foreseeable future. So, the next time Florida helps put a Democrat in the White House, that Democratic president had better do everything short of lashing himself to the beach as a human shield the next time Florida gets pounded with four big hurricanes in a row.

'Cause if he (or *shudder* she) doesn't, and people are killed, as usually happens in hurricanes, then hey: Floridians will have only themselves to blame for their misery, right?

So are the other port areas of the USA going to now pick up the slack?

Ports of Tampa, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and Palm Beach are open for business...

I am pleased that you had chance to sign up and vent. As we all need to. I agree politics have nothing to do with it right now. Survival is the key. I have 14 family members in Biloxi that I cant get ahold of so . . . vent away. I've read thousands of rants and flames over the last few days. Most venting and I understand. I am in shock of what I see and can only imagine what my kin folk are going through . . . It kills me though, deputytess, how Gov. Blanco can't hide what a scared, spineless, woofle she really is. She has no business leading or governing anything but her bath water.

Prayers going up from WI for all those wet, hungry, thirsty and frightened people in the pitch dark right now tonight.

flame away!!!

My favorites have been the Monday-morning meteorologists from Iowa, who've never been in one of these storms in their lives, that have decided a Category 4 hurricane was the fault of politicians, and that a disaster 300 years in the making can be directly assigned to whoever happens to be in office now.

Exactly

People of this area need our prayers but I don't want anyone to forget the incompetence of a Mayor and Governor after this is all over. Don't let them get away with this travesty.

Those two are in over their heads and NO right now needs someone who knows what heck they are doing to take charge and pronto

Wake-up friend, Florida was carried by GW Bush by close to a 400,000 vote margin in 2004, and Florida, by the way is a lot more Republican than the state of Louisiana. Just tally up the number of legislators, and see who comes out on top. And....by the way only one statewide office is held by a Democrat, and it is Senator Bill Nelson, who along with his empty suit will be retired to the black hole where he so rightfully belongs, next year. Jeb Bush, today has an approval rating of 58% of Florida voters, quite a feat for a two time Governor. And....com'n, you can't compare that moron Kathleen Blanco to Jeb Bush. They are not in the same league, no matter how you score the game. Bottom line is: Elections do count, and.... Louisiana voted for a buffoon, and now they must live within a void of leadership that they thrust upon themselves willingly.

The point that jumping on the bandwagon and verbally hacking away at Blanco and the Mayor is not unlike the Liberals' actions as regards everything being Bush's fault.

Great post. Do we really expect to hold Barbour responsible for the damage in his state?

This was an act of God, the best thing we can do now is to chip in whatever we can afford, and pull together.

We're all Americans, after all.

I would evacuate the city at any cost when Hurricane Center issued the forecast of Katrina aiming on NO 2 days or more before disaster struck? Is it that difficult to figure out?

So you hold Haley Barbour responsible for the deaths in gulfport?

She has no business leading or governing anything but her bath water.

Even in bath water, she'd be in over her head.

I hope Mississippi and other states which DID get hit dead on, are not neglected due to the problems in NO--problems caused directly by the corruption and incompetence within the Louisiana state and local governments. Prayers for you and yours!
No cheers, due to Katrina!

Translation: "Republican Floridians deserve to live. Democrat Louisianians don't." (I'm sure an "end of story" fits in there somewhere.)

Keep digging, "friend".

The mayor, the governor, they missed an entire day on Saturday to get the word out. And why were the highways on Sunday only opened on the outbound lanes? Anybody who was deterred from evacuating by the gridlock could be in a world of hurt right now.

I'm not happy with the Federal response either. They knew it was a category 5 headed for populated areas. What has happened to all the Homeland Security money? Because if this is how they plan to evacuate after a terrorist attack, we're in trouble. At least Bush cancelled his vacation, starting tomorrow. That's something.

Mayor Nagin on CNN just said that the people at the Superdome can expect to be there at least another week due to the flooding around the area making transportation impossible.
