With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that everyone still in the city, now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers, needs to be evacuated.
"The situation is untenable," Blanco said, pausing to choke back tears at a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."
The breach of two levees Tuesday meant the city was rapidly filling with water and the prospect of having power was a long time off, the governor said. She said the storm also severed a major water main, leaving the city without drinkable water.
"The goal is to bring enough supplies to sustain the people until we can establish a network to get them out," Blanco said.
FEMA is considering putting people on cruise ships, in tent cities, mobile home parks, or so-called floating dormitories, boats FEMA normally uses to house its own employees, said Coordinating Director Bill Lokey.

It will be rebuilt. Sacramento was flooded in the 1800's and they made that city higher. The basements in old town Sacramento used to be street level.
Anyway, the engineers will figure out a way to make it safer, and it is the American Way.
Repost
They just did a story about looting on the CBS News. Police officers were taking supplies from a flooded Walgreens to people in another part of the city where it was even worse, then told the people standing outside of the Walgreens "I cant say you're welcome to it, but you've gotta do what you've gotta do to survive."
he just said a few moments ago that for those that have not yet evacuated from NO,
You're making us look like DU!
I'm glad you said that. Since the hurricane I have been disgusted with some of the posts on FR. Some FReepers (including many "oldtimers") have delighted in the peril of others, including a FReeper who wanted to continue to watch the FOX broadcast in the hopes of watching Shep Smith "buy it". Many were blasting the government and government officials with incompetence before there was any damage and others engaged in a war of words over silly, petty matters. I had to stop reading the continuing hurricane thread b/c there was so much hate being posted. What has happened to FR? Is this how good people respond when we have a disaster? I expect to be flamed for my post so I'm going into the other room to put on my asbestos suit now. *sigh*
I heard a report that there was a pawn store looted, guess what was looted there ;~) and then set on fire to cover the robbery. Then the fire cooks off the ammo.
I've been wondering what's happened to the zoo? Are there vicious animals wandering around?? Surely some of them would escape and survive long enough to cause some problems!
Some people could not leave. It is easy for all of us to say "why didn't they leave"
Tens of thousands of people did not have cars. The roads were completely packed...bumper to bumper.
By the time people realized the hurricane was going to hit them it was too late.
Over one million people in that city alone.
Not everyone has the means to evacuate.
It is just a terrible situation all the way around. The easy thing would be for some people to sit back and be glib about it and say "they should have left...I don't feel sorry for them"
These are most likely the people who really don't care anyway about their fellow Americans...so it is pointless to argue with them.
Hmmm. Food I can see. Milk, bread, fruit will go bad. They could need neosporin and such if the water they are wading through is half as bad as described. Don't even begrudge them a water-soaked People or two.
But when they start hitting the condoms and Sudafed, I'm less charitable.
They were in the process of sending them to the state. I saw a helo shot of them on a overpass on ramp, surrounded by water and guards on the highway.
No flames here. I agree. Some disgusting stuff. Whatever happened to "There but for the grace of God . . ."? I guess that only counts if you make the right decisions.
One thing I would say is that I wouldn't lump someone who "loots" food in the same category with someone who loots home electronics. I'm not faulting anyone who's after the basics of life under these circumstances - particularly if those goods are otherwise going to find their way to the landfill.
Don't worry about that. See my post #26. There are already reports of pawn shops looted (guns) and being set on fire.
I agree, I have no problem with food stuffs, but I afraid that is not the case here.
There have also been reports today of TVs, stereos, etc, you know, the real essentials.
/ sarcasm
They haven't lived through a mid-atlantic snow storm. Then they'd know the real essentials are Twinkies and TP!
I don't know. My prayers continue. My heart just goes out to these people, and the animals. I'm sure I have a bunch of guardian angels, and I've dispatched the entire lot to those who may perish otherwise! Of course, this means I have to be very careful. :)
My prayers are going up for all the people who have experienced this terrible disaster.
Exactly, at a time like this, there are no Republicans or Democrats, we are all in this together. We can play "Monday Morning Quarterback" later.
Get lost. You could only hope to be half as competent as the public officials involved with this disaster.
Of course, the funny thing is that the water will ruin the electronics and estimates are that it could be several weeks before power is restored. So these kids lug a big TV home, set it in the middle of the living room for several weeks, get power, and it doesnt work. LOL!!
