Governor says entire city (New Orleans) needs to be evacuated

With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that everyone still in the city, now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers, needs to be evacuated.

"The situation is untenable," Blanco said, pausing to choke back tears at a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

The breach of two levees Tuesday meant the city was rapidly filling with water and the prospect of having power was a long time off, the governor said. She said the storm also severed a major water main, leaving the city without drinkable water.

"The goal is to bring enough supplies to sustain the people until we can establish a network to get them out," Blanco said.

FEMA is considering putting people on cruise ships, in tent cities, mobile home parks, or so-called floating dormitories, boats FEMA normally uses to house its own employees, said Coordinating Director Bill Lokey.

So many of the people who stayed had no where to go. Staying was not a decision. It was reality. I have to think that some people who are behaving in a mean spirited manner are just scared. It's interesting, and sometimes distressing, to see how different people react when faced with danger or watching others facing danger.

>>just so they can stay and loot all the diamonds out of the jewelry stores I know something about that. There probably isn't a jeweler in NO who doesn't take the diamonds out of the stores every night --- be the night wet or dry. Looters are grabbing things that are a wee bit harder to stuff in your waistband.

Heck, in a pinch you can swallow your diamonds. Nuff said. :)

They just reported on WWL that the Mayor's office said that in the next 12-15 hours the city will be under at least nine feet of water. The breech in the levee is not where they thought which made it worse.

this situation is unimaginable to me where I am in the upper midwest!

Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that "everyone still in the city", now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers, "needs to be evacuated"...AND...She said "the storm also severed a major water main, leaving the city without drinkable water."

Can someone step up and take charge here?!? OR at least keep her away and shut her up?

A city without water, devestaed from flood and distruction, panicking and staring at night fall very soon. My GOD!!! They need a strong leader. Not this corrupt coward.

Lord Help ALL devastated by this tragedy!!! . . . Louisana, Mississippi, Alabama . . .

Flame Away :)

I agree with you for the most part. That said, the news conference today by the Governor and the Mayor on Sunday morning were horrible.

They need someone in charge and lack of people in charge is unfathomable.

WWL is reporting that the Mayor's Office said that in 12-15 hours the city will be under nine feet of water. That means they don't have much time to get people all out. They are now driving boats through neighborhoods with bullhorns to see if people are still alive in the houses and need rescued. I just saw a cute dog rescued.

People of this area need our prayers but I don't want anyone to forget the incompetence of a Mayor and Governor after this is all over. Don't let them get away with this travesty.

You know, Coop, I got a lump in my throat when I saw the Coast Guard choppers rescuing people off the roofs of the flooded homes. I'm so in awe of these guys and gals who make these kinds of sacrifices for their fellow man. Also, the elected officials of these cities and states are carrying the burden of this disaster on their shoulders. I'm sure that every one of them cares deeply about the people who are suffering. It's a shame that people can't stop being cynics long enough to see that.

"With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating..."

NOLA in fact has been deteriorating for years. This is the final blow. It's a human and economic nightmare, from which the city will never recover. A former mayor of NOLA (Moriel, I think was his name) once said it's a "city that should not have been built" (below sea level). Thousands of homes and businesses have been destroyed. Who in his right mind would want to rebuild several feet below sea level after this? Who in his right mind would want to invest in same?

Another support for your post. There are too many Freepers who leave me with no answer to the jibe from the left - "Your side is whacko". Somehow, "yours is too" isn't satisfying.

You may have understood Shep correctly about "no way out" - but - he was not correct...

Although I have not seen any detailed reports of the infrastructure on the WEST side of the river (Avondale - Westwego - Luling - Raceland - Houma) I can report that the GNO bridge, which is 4 hwy and 2 railroad lanes, has been inspected and is servicable.

Aside from some local tree - power line issues on the west side, we (the UP Railroad) is in business north to Livonia and Alexandria and west to Lafayette. Hwy travel should be possible as the west side received very little of the high winds and heavy rains. We have inspectors on the rails Monday afternoon and rode all the way to Avondale after clearing a few trees and going around a power line down.

If a vehicle can get to the east end of the bridge - they can get out.. When vehicles can come in from the west - turn and leave - there is a way out..

I wonder if Fox will ask Jug Twitty for his opinion on the Hurricane. I also wonder if Fox will find some Pretty Young white girl who has been lost in the storm that we should emphasize above all others.

I just wish that they would hold off with the blame until everyone is rescued and safe. Even after 9-11 the blame didn't start until the ash had settled. Let's wait until the people are safe for God's sake. Then those who want a Hurricane Katrina Commission can call for one.

Too little, to late, incompetent and irresponsible b*tch!

Gee thanks for that little contribution. I am sure it is REALLY going to help matters? I guess you have donated to the relief funds yet? Nope? Well then you have at least researched how to send aid or help people right?

Of course, the funny thing is that the water will ruin the electronics and estimates are that it could be several weeks before power is restored.

Actually, solid state electronics, if they're not under power, can get wet and still be good; as long as they are dried out when power is reapplied. And it seems it will have time to dry before power is available.

They just did a story about looting on the CBS News. Police officers were taking supplies from a flooded Walgreens to people in another part of the city where it was even worse, then told the people standing outside of the Walgreens "I cant say you're welcome to it, but you've gotta do what you've gotta do to survive."

I would have said : "I won't shoot you in the kneecap if you help carry this stuff to the shelter and the old folk's home".

Governor Blanco,

A late breaking flash: Water flows toward the lowest point, in your case the bowl called New Orleans. Which means when the hurricane passes over New Orleans and begins dumping large amounts of that water to your north, or upstream as it is, all is not well.

There are a lot of side stories to this hurricane disaster, and many FR members want to state what they believe are VERY important issues.

Example--I personally am outraged that we give so many BILLIONS and BILLIONS of dollars to foreign nations, yet we do not take care of our own nation, and other nations do not help us in our time of need.

Don't get too upset with posts from other members . There are many very legitimate issues to be raised about how we run our nation, how we prepare (or fail to prepare) our nation for potential disasters, and our priorities, as well as the global welfare binge our nation has been on.

Please do not stifle the opinion of others. There are crucial issues to be discussed, and there are only so many thousands of posts that can be made about "saying our prayers" for the people of New Orleans. If somebody wants to raise a side issue, that is what this forum is all about.

I don't see how they are going to empty an entire city - the cost is going to be enormous and there will be a lot resistance.

It is unprecedented and mind boggling.
