Governor says entire city (New Orleans) needs to be evacuated

With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Gov. Kathleen Blanco said Tuesday that everyone still in the city, now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers, needs to be evacuated.

"The situation is untenable," Blanco said, pausing to choke back tears at a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

The breach of two levees Tuesday meant the city was rapidly filling with water and the prospect of having power was a long time off, the governor said. She said the storm also severed a major water main, leaving the city without drinkable water.

"The goal is to bring enough supplies to sustain the people until we can establish a network to get them out," Blanco said.

FEMA is considering putting people on cruise ships, in tent cities, mobile home parks, or so-called floating dormitories, boats FEMA normally uses to house its own employees, said Coordinating Director Bill Lokey.

And I'm sure Louisiana has more than it's share of soldiers fighting for us in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are the UNITED states.

They are up against this law too

"Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."

The “Posse Comitatus Act” 18 U.S.C. 1385

Get lost. You could only hope to be half as competent as the public officials involved with this disaster.

Are you one of them? (Incompetent, irresponsible and arrogant public officials?)

Kathleen Blanco just proves that democRATs do not know how to
handle anything other than raising taxes and building nanny states.

She should resign and let someone that knows how to deal with
reality handle the job.

You have to ask? Heck, I thought you already knew everything.

I only have this to say. Elections matter, and they have consquences!!! Ms. Blanco and the Mayor of New Orleans are neither leaders or accountable!!! The only people to blame are the voters that put them there IMHO. End of story!!! I take this hard line because if our country is to survive, we must become hardened, strong, determined and focused. We are not that way now, thanks to the liberal Democrat vermin that are destroying our country.

And what would YOU have done?

I would evacuate the city at any cost when Hurricane Center issued the forecast of Katrina aiming on NO 2 days or more before disaster struck? Is it that difficult to figure out?

With something like a hurricane, and all the information that is available, and with the power available to governors and local officials, there is very little wiggle room for Ms. Blanco, or the Mayor.

The point that jumping on the bandwagon and verbally hacking away at Blanco and the Mayor is not unlike the Liberals' actions as regards everything being Bush's fault.

But seriously, why can't we judge these people by their actions?

Yours is a very good post and you are right. It's not just governments that push aside dealing with issues. I am a consultant and I work with businesses that are managed by people who do NOT manage. Those same people will point the finger at the seven dollar an hour underlings when something goes wrong that THEY are paid to handle.

For example, why is Governor Blanco on the freaking Larry King show tonight?

Yes I'm sure that she was videotaped from somewhere but bear in mind it was not a phone call. Thus there was the bother of transport, the hair, the makeup...yada, yada.

The subject of this very thread is the problem that suddenly thrust its head, the fact that the Army corps of engineers can not find that breach and the pumps are going to fail. I'm quite sure there's meetings across the country because they are going to HAVE to evacuate those people.

The Governor of a state in the midst of a crisis such as this should NOT, given the timing and circumstance and looming disaster, be on Larry King! And yes, it was live.

The Governor should freaking be RUNNING THINGS!

She should be out and about and encouraging her citizens to be brave. She would get a better return for her time if she spent the same amount of time she spent on Larry King by taking a ride out to the Superdome. Give those suffering and scared people some hope.

After all, how much of her citizenry is going to see her on Larry King?

It is, ahem, what LEADERS DO!

This is just one example. Anyone with a little experience can spot head on what these people are doing wrong. Leadership is what we should expect from leaders. Governor Blanco is all about her and not about the people she serves.

They can't make people leave if they don't want to go.

Seems to me the evacuation order is ultimatly an admission that the NO government officials can't handle the situation between the looting and the levies failing.

Why didn't they order more help?

Not brillant logic, of course, just pragmatic reality. You make a bad choice in love, you live with it. You make a bad choice in business, you live with it. You make a bad choice in an investment, you live with it. You make a bad choice in politics, you live with it. End of story!!! Get real!!!

The only thing democrats are doing is trying to figure out how to TAX PEOPLE MORE in the wake of this disaster.

They probably ALREADY have a laundry list of money they want. (get ready for Big Dig II)

I found it ironic that they were taking electronics and had no power. Very strange. I certainly wouldn't begrudge people taking food and water, what else can they do?

It's interesting, and sometimes distressing, to see how different people react when faced with danger or watching others facing danger.

That's why heroes are so venerated - not everyone can be one.
