The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

The water level in Ponchatrain and the city will be below that in the river still.

That map says the Causeway is ok and driveable. Do you have a source for that info?

Why are there no pictures of the levee breaks? Seems to me that is where the news is.

and how, other than by helicopter, do you suppose people are going to get there? You really expect a reporter to be standing on the leeve as if breaks open?

It's because it's the Redneck Riviera, as Chris Matthews put it. If this were New York or Los Angeles they'd be wall to wall.

Do you know what the difference in elevation is between the river and the lake?

Good news for a change. They are sending the Navy in, like they did after the tsunami. Eight maritime rescue teams. I hope they can rescue all those people still trapped in attics.

I was shocked the broadcast networks weren't live tonight with coverage. I was also disappointed the president didn't address the nation tonight. This is a national catastrophe.

Right now, it's a damned-if-he-did, damned-if-he-didn't situation. Anything he says while still out in Crawford would be twisted by the alphabet soup into something like, "He's not really taking this seriously."

As for the over-the-air alphabet soup, I would have expected at least hourly bulletins (hard to do more than that, really).

Yea, when they could walk or ride in a vehicle to the scene, not swim. Besides, it was reported this afternoon that mostly all communication has failed.

Well I would think that the Guard would have access to some kind of amphibious vehicles stockpiled out the wazoo somewhere. And for some odd reason, I always believed they were capable of using their own, independent communication systems no matter where they went.

We sure do need a good sound energy plan and we need to tell the Governors of FL and CA to get with it on off shore drilling and forget about views -- we need the oil. It is touchy with me because everywhere I go around here I see oil wells pumping and it doesn't bother me a bit.

Two feet of water around the SuperDome is all you need to know that the rat bastard Mayor of NO is not doing his job. He's sitting around trading recipes with that equally repugnant Larry King.

Don't forget the yucking it up part of the interview.

The moron has a human castrophe of "biblical proportions" on his hands and he's laughing.

If there was oil under one of my wheat fields, I'd be telling some drilling company to get in there and start drilling.

What was the point you wanted to make...

At this point I've forgotten as I was so focused on finding that damn graphic (which was bookmarked on my other computer which crashed last night).

Overall, my point was that sea level as a point of reference may be misleading if the river levees are breached. Furthermore, I'm not so sure that the lake can't fill most of the city on its own. So to try to repair the breach is futile until the lake and the city are in equilibrium.

How's that?

No. He missed it tonight. He NEEDS to speak tomorrow morning. The situation is spiraling downward. He needs to assert control and assure the affected people that the country stands with them.

The media will report whatever he says in the morning all day while he prepares for the primetime address he needs to make tomorrow night from the White House.

His mind needs to be quarantined, only if we can find something small enough to put it in.

I'm not looking for him to be on-site. IMO, that would be a huge mistake at this point, taking up valuable resources for a photo op. He needs to get on the airwaves and lay out the plan, if there is one. The only plan I've heard so far is that they're working on a plan. I'm sure that's very reassuring to the people who are living a nightmare that gets worse almost by the hour.

Agreed. 100%. I am seeing a lack of action on all fronts - local, state, federal. The parish president seems to be doing what he can with no resources, but this is a national catastrophe, it will affect our entire economy - but more than that, it is a humanitarian disaster involving our fellow Americans. All I saw before the hurricane was FEMA and Homeland Security saying "we are ready." Obviously not! Everyone heard the same doomsday scenarios. But all day today, no repair work (for starters) on the levee breach that we all heard (falsely) was in progress..

Arrg! I love New Orleans. This is killing me. It's frustrating for everyone, I know. Prayers for everyone in that nightmare right now.
