The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Glad that you have your power back, and are all right.

And if you had any experience with this type of thing, you would be appalled too.

Funny you should mention it. I'm not unfamiliar with Failure Analysis. I'm not appalled that failures happen, I'm merely amused when people find them somehow unusual.

These levees failed under blue skies and this will be right up there with the Titanic.

Well... that would be because it wasn't the color of the sky that caused the problem. It was the amount of water behind the levee that caused the problem. I'm sure you think that a few guys with shop-vacs could have solved this, but sometimes in what some of call "the real world" there are problems that just develop too quickly and too big to deal with effectively in time to prevent horrific loss.

I know that you think there is some magically simple plan that would have prevented all this. Good for you. Keep thinking that. You just happen to be wrong. Sometimes nature can overwhelm any plan. That this will continue to be true will be a consistent annoyance in your life. I would suggest finding some way of dealing with it.

I have this huge book on that disaster....it says that thousands died...not the low number that Sunset magazine kept repeating...they literally rewrote history....

LA has the gas problem also, as evidenced in the Northridge earthquake...the oil pipeline that blew up in Sylmar, and natural gas in Northridge.

In their situation, I would be helping myself to what I need to survive.

That is totally understandable; however, plasma TVs, jewelry, stereos, and multiple pairs of jeans are NOT goods needed for survival.

Lots of pumps have open motors.

In this case it may have been the power generators (diesel?)that were flooded.

"It would seem bizarre that someone would want to stay, but if looting is going on, there might be those that want to loot and will try to stay in town?"

All day I've had an image of this weird new subculture forming in what's left of NOLA. They wouldn't be able to get them out if they didn't want to go...I'm picturing creepy swamp rat gangs of people lurking around and hiding from national guard and police officers.

Possible. The repaired portions only have temporary metal grid spans. I know they shut it down partially before the storm.

what's going to happen ti improve the situation during this week they these people are left in the superdome?

Yes, I understand that. What I can't figure out is why the wind and waves only knocked alternating sections out of place while leaving the rest in place.

I'll keep out a good thought.

Anything you run across that's really pertinent, please ping Alnick. She evacuated to relatives in TN but fears everything in her town is gone.

Mandatory evacuation wasn't done until Sunday morning not Saturday. He recommended people evacuate on Saturday but it was not mandatory.

You put it much nicer than I would have. I have never seen such a discombobulated nincompoop in my life. If he can't lead, get the heck of of the way so someone else can!

And, it is obvious, he can't lead.

I'm sorry, but when is someone going to take over here? If I was standing in the sidelines, I would be hitting the roof. I hope the voters do, but I'm afraid lots of them will not be around to vote. Dear God - what a travesty!

NO Mayor on CNN: evacuees will be in the Superdome at least another week unless they can get an evac plan in place because of the rising water.

Gooberner Blanco said that NO had to be evacuated.

Are these two on the same page?

OK, in other words, the news from Drudge was so scary, I wanted to ignore it...not ignore you. So it took awhile for me (and some others) to reply.

Never mind. I never do well with my stream-of-consciousness posts. ;)

Deaths probably 200 or so. 500-1000 tops...

What are you people basing this "200 or so" number on, when only a tiny percentage of the damaged area has been explored and no one can be sure how many people stayed behind in places like Plaquemines Parish?

Gotcha. I say the same thing about the south -- everyone gets along better in our town better than up north, that's for sure.
