The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

I clearly heard Nagin? begging people to get out on Sat around noon. He was very grave at that time. That would have been all I needed.

The Saturday evacuation calls were voluntary. The Sunday one (which happened about 8 am) was the first mandatory.

That's a bizarre photo. What the heck would cause damage like that to a highway bridge? Every other section of bridge structure has been lifted out of place

FWIW, each of the sections is built independent of the next, which explains why some sections survived and others didn't. Don't know what caused the sections to tip, but the amount of debris on the bridge deck seems to indicate a pretty significant current, so perhaps the water simply lifted the roadway right off the piers.

"It's gonna top 200 in MS alone.
I think we'll be lucky if it doesn't top 1000."

I dread to put a number on something like this as it might come to pass.

But it is dreadful that there is no outrage that the levees failed under blue skies.

Exactly what was done in Homestead Florida... a city of tents or other housing for the storm's refugees... if the city is to be totally evacuated, this will have to be accomplished... what I simply cannot understand.. what is taking so long to come up with a "plan".. everyone keeps talking about a "Plan"... where is the real leadership in NO? Step up and make decisions... with a robust strategy.. what in the heck is so difficult? People are truly suffering while the "leadership" all talk... ouch!!!

At this point, even the organizations like FEMA who provide assistance cannot get to the victims.. if they were all transported to a tent city, they could easily work with them...

Oh yes.. it is equally important for a temporary city to have laws and policies... and security to ensure there implementation.. but it would certainly be better than what is going on now...

But by that logic, we would have to blame the people for staying.

Sorry, but in this forum, we blame politicians.

Take care. I had loved ones in a very large tornado..involved in finding (praise God), moving them the following day, and cleaning up what remained of their furniture and clothing...I felt like we were in a war zone ..Prayers for all.

That's right, but the riots went on the better part of a week... they had some history to go on, however because of the 60's riots which were devestating.

> My point earlier this thread was that actions taken by authorities in the few days leading up to and since Monday will not deserve the criticism that many here want to throw at them.

I am referring here to the ENGINEERING authorities (i.e., the ones dealing with water technology), not the POLITICAL authorities (dealing with strategic planning and vision). Politicians are always fair game, even when they don't deserve it.

"Money is something most of the airlines don't have. United is in Bankruptcy, Delta will likely file in a few weeks, NW is having to break a union to stay solvent, USAir just got bought out of bankruptcy court, TWA is gone, American might avoid filing if fuel prices drop soon.

Instead, they got their planes clear of the storm (know what a storm can do to a jetliner in flight? Google up what happened to the Southern Air Lines DC-9 in Georgia a few decades ago - it changed forever the way the airlines treat storms.) ANd they gave their ground crews a chance to get their families to safety."

Wow! At least someone besides me agrees that the airlines are not to blame! Thanks for making so much sense!

You are right. I have heard for years how NO would one day float in the sea from a big cane. Mostly people joking about it. But I can't believe there really was no plan down there-- pumps that can only handly 2 inches of rain? On the coast? No back ups? And in CA they have to build everything quake proof.
