The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Step up and make decisions... with a robust strategy.. what in the heck is so difficult? People are truly suffering while the "leadership" all talk... ouch!!! At this point, even the organizations like FEMA who provide assistance cannot get to the victims.. if they were all transported to a tent city, they could easily work with them...

The biggest problem is that it is August, at the height of storm season. Every politician and field supervisor has in the back of their mind the possibility that they go set up a tent city and another hurricane comes in and wipes it out. Or that a tornado comes through and levels the place.

Oh, and you have homeless people from a region the size of Texas. But that's the minor part of the challenge. A million people is alot to handle, no matter how you slice it.

"The airlines indeed deserve some blame, they pulled out way too soon."

I think you're the governor in disguise.

Did you post this information to the Freepers check in thread?

I know plenty of folks were asking about Slidell, and your first-hand information is very valuable.

Those winds didn't arrive until Sunday afternoon, 24 hours after the airlines pulled out.

A lttle bit of fact was that Nagin wasnt sure he had the legal authority to call it. As a part of an mandatory evac order was the abilty to seize private autos and buildings now I know since the Supreme Court's great case last month how we think of the govt doing that on this board. So the manadatory gave him more police powers to seize stuff but he couldnt arrest people and send them to baton rouge

Well we already know that Dubya doesn't like using the Army Corps of Engineers on domestic infrastructure projects, like rebuilding locks, dams, levees, etc.

Kinda snarky of you, isn't it, Willie?

Glad you are OK. I lived on an Air Force Base in NC during hurricane Fran and we got power back within 48 hours.... it was weeks for the surrounding communities.

CNN reported an additional five feet of water in the city by morning. Pumps are failing because they are under water now.

"Beyond that, your classless attempt at some racist angle on fingerpointing for the design of the city of New Orleans"

If you assumed race, you missed my point.

I meant that these engineers that design levees and sewage plants and such are not Phi Beta Kappa - in fact just the opposite. And if you had any experience with this type of thing, you would be appalled too.

These levees failed under blue skies and this will be right up there with the Titanic.

CNN showing Slidell now.

Our pastor has a son-in-law and daughter that live in Slidell. Their daughter and their twin little grand babies left Sunday morning, but their son-in-law stayed to ride it out with his parents and other family members. They just heard from their daughter and all is fine. Slidell is mostly a mess, but I guess they live on the west side where the storm surge wasn't as bad. So there is hope.

Sheesh, and I guess those that are pointing out that the Governor is incompetent and she is a woman and the fact that she is a woman leads to incompentency aren't bigots, eh?

Glad to hear you are OK and have power.

OBTW - did you or anyone hear the report on Fox some time ago that some people were refusing the Coast Guard from rescue because they "saw that the water was going down." These were people on the top of their roofs.

That was before the the 3rd overflow/failure occurred.

God help these people...

"I wouldn't feel comforted if I was in the Superdome and I heard the only response of the Governor was that she was going to call for a day of Prayer."

I would. Guess that's the difference between you and me. I would want lots of prayer.

LOL. That comment was in response to an idiotic statement by Shep Smith earlier today . . . that "nobody knows why the water keeps rising."

Well duh, Shep -- what do you think is going to happen when a body of water at a high elevation meets a city at a lower elevation?
