Katrina Live Thread, Part XI

The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Yeppers...and this calls for the jazz and country type entertainers to get together and maybe do for these people what other groups have done for other disasters...

I think unless Nashville is horribly damaged, it would be a good staging ground for a concert or two...Dallas, Houston, Austin could all hold fundraiser concerts...

I think Carville in private is much different, how else could he had married Mary Matalin.

Carville always seems to me like a smart guy who is doing his job- for the wrong side. I see his face when he opens his mouth sometimes and know he knows he is full of it.

God Bless you, again, for opening your home to those families. I read your post the other night about stepping over children sleeping on the floor as you left for work. Thank God for people like you.

Any Freeper families that are in need of a place to stay, as it sounds like it could be a long time are welcome here too. Ohio is a bit of a ways, but it'll be fall and a beautiful time for a good long visit. Family of 4 welcome.

Canada has already surpassed Saudi Arabia as the largest supplier of U.S. oil imports

I had no idea...

Most Albertans I know don't think of themselves as Canadians anyway.

This is off-topic, but the one friend I've made here is from Calgary. She's the only person I've met who doesn't hate George Bush and who understands how aggravating it is to be subjected to anti-Americanism in the news media up here.

Big question is, where are they all going to go?

Those poor people. Most there probably didn't leave because they had nowhere or no means to go in the first place.

< I think Carville in private is much different, how else could he had married Mary Matalin. I read the book he co-wrote with her, he seems actually to be a very likable guy in spite of his politics. >

He has his momments. Funniest thing I ever saw during an elextion was him putting a trash can over his head when the Dims got beat after all his rosey pedictions.

Forgive me if I posted this, but I think I missed it in my last post.

Another thing which was reported related to Slidell is that the Lake rose to above the twin span bridges (I-10). When the water receded, it was revealed that entire sections of the twin spans are missing.

Bourbon street is listed at 2.5 below sea level. Lake P's normal level is 1 foot above sea level and someone said it is 4" above that. Time will tell.

From a graphic I saw at www.nola.com, Bourbon street is actually 2.5 fee ABOVE sea level. It is in an area that gradually slopes up to the river levees.

NPR lead off with "whole communities have been wiped out". In MS, there are reports that entire towns have been washed away. In NO, there are two breaches in the levees, and there is fear. They are trying to get supplies to the shelters as a priority, but... Rescue is the current focus. NPR notes looting and the pulling of people off of rooftops.
