The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Not many Margaret Thatchers in this world, nor Churchills. Strong leaders in elective office are rare. That's why people get gulled by the Perons of this world.

The mayor was on wwltv...

was good, but tired. Said all day he and others were trying to get the NG helicopters to lift the bags to the levee breaches. But they wouldn't back off the rescues.

I believe him. The NG spokesman in response gave a bureaucratic answer "the levees had highest priority" - true, where were the helicopters?

Nice photos and map. I love the line about large sandbags standing by to plug the 17th St canal in case of a hurricane. I wonder if they were in place?

Its a big lake with no hill

OH Really? The portions of the state north of the Lake are LOWER than the lake? You know: the places that got all that rain as Katrina moved upstate? Where did all that rain run off then... to the NORTH? Don't think so.

You need Jeb Bush! (but you can't have him)...after Hurricane Charley he was actually criticized for having help (FEMA, power trucks, etc.) on hand too soon.

They accused him of having some influence because he was the President's brother, but the truth is he knew a hurricane was coming and started setting the framework in order for the recovery period days before the hurricane arrived (just had to send them a little further south than he had anticipated because Charley made that jog in over Charlotte County instead of Tampa Bay area.)

I still get the impression everytime I hear from the Governor or Mayor that they were in a complete state of denial that this could ever happen in New Orleans, but you can google a dozen sites that set out this exact same scenario and predict that some day it would happen.

They were talking the first night about 20,000 .. then most reporters were saying 10,000 .. but interspersed in there, I think I did hear 20,000 after 10,000 .. screwy.

Joe Scarborough's saying: "You're talking about a nightmare scenario .." PS, Joe .. it's been a gathering nightmare since Saturday.

This is Hell on earth .. and people just don't understand that no help can get in there with the water. Closing the Dome makes it all the more a deadly situation .. where are all these people being sent?

Was the housing offers for victims thread link posted here? Don't want to duplicate it.

But, THIS IS AN ADDRESS TO THE NATION SITUATION. This is really serious. He needs to get all our attention on this.

No it's not. The situation is not over. It is the governor's duty to address the current situation. A speech can wait. None of the people who need to hear him have a TV or radio.

> The failure of the dikes after the passing of the hurricane and storm surge will amount to one of the biggest boondoggles in history.

You don't seem to appreciate the amount of potential energy that floodwaters possess. To me, this is like the people walking around Hiroshima after the bomb. Walking dead... yeah, they survived, but would certainly die within the week. Same way with the dikes, if you ask me. They survived Monday's onslaught, but the waters had to go somewhere, and the lowest ground is New Orleans.

> You have no idea what this 9' of water will cost us in the next 48 hrs - in $ and lives.

I know as well as you what it will cost us. A sizable fraction of 9/11 costs in dollars, and a sizeable fraction of 9/11 cost in lives. Neither of which can compare to the Chernobyl disaster... unless you're a communist government that doesn't give a rat's arse about your people's health and welfare.

The number of people that could have been taken out on planes would have been negligible. Really. It is hard to imagine the airplanes doing much when the Gov and Mayor were not ordering evacs.

The tsunami also killed that many due to the incredible population there. Imagine a Cane like this showing up with no warning at all.... It would have killed over a million people. Thank God for our weather service and communication capabilities.

They have the same ozone setup that gas stations have in Houston and other cities that have had ozone problems.

Thanks. There's your answer, PtBoR - Atlanta has "boutique" (reformulated) gas.
