Katrina Live Thread, Part XI

The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Has anyone seen the Mayor of NO since that interview last night? Is that shadow government up and running in Baton Rouge?

He's live on WWL right now with more bad news.

Since I have been told it cannot be from the Mississippi River, I have absolutely no idea.

I certainly understand your concern. It's been mine all day and I've been watching it closely, as it appears you have. All we know is what we hear from authorities and the media. I also thought and have asked many question about it that the water must be coming from elswhere. But I'm assured so far that it's not from the river yet. I'm sure you know it's all over if that happens.

It's from Lake Pontchartrain.

NO is about 6ft below, so waters should rise to 9ft in most places then? Am I reading this right?

No, the numbers used by the Mayor were relevant to the EAST BANK only.

Gov. said on TV (CNN) just now, he was 'chomping at the bit to get down there'. I would imagine he'll be there by Thursday, even if it is just a flyover.

WOW! They should help that area.

This Mayor is not very reassuring. Saying the next highest priority this morning was to put in the sandbags but doesn't know why it didn't happen. Will check and find out why. Unbelieveable.

Talking about rebuilding when everything is going downhill. Nothing to slow down the pace of the water. Don't know if they should go to the Superdome -- if you have someplace in the house that is over 8-10 feet stay there. Freaking unbelieveable!

"I dunno... maybe cuz it's a little harder to do on scene than from behind a keyboard. Just a guess."

I was at another disaster a few years ago and it took the govt a few days to catch up with what was done by private contractors that donated time and equipment.

You might have heard of it - WTC

My father suggested there be an executive order to ban all the "boutique blends" of fuel through this time period.
An excellent idea! An executive order by President Bush to keep our economy going - "stroke of a pen - law of the land - pretty cool!" or words to that effect.

Here's all the contact info I have:

Whitehouse: (202) 456-1414 - Fax: (202) 456-2461

Address:
President George W. Bush
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Don't be afraid - be mildly assertive with the switchboard saying how your Dad's idea could save us a lot of grief and economic losses with little damage to the environment given the low emissions of modern cars. Of course the EO would be temporary - just til things get back to normal.

At least ask that a message be passed towards President Bush. Don't let them pass you to the EPA. ;-) Good Luck!

There aren't very many of them and I'll bet there in the middle east.

Use choppers, boats to get people to buses. Take them to the closest 36 large cities with shelters. Split them up into small groups.

Yes they did and if I recall there was a huge outcry about it...something about them not knowing how to police, only soldier.

Yup 870. It's just a shame they do not stream their signal. I am hearing them just now in Upper East Tennessee.

They get solid news. I will relay what I get.

He did specifically address this today. People are still trying to get a handle on the scale of it.

And, no, he can't be impeached for this. He first has to stand for global warming charges.../sarcasm off

The water in NO will rise to the level of Lake Ponchartrain, which is about 3 feet above sea level right now.
,br> "Lake Ponchartrain is 3ft above sea level, NO is about 6ft below, so waters should rise to 9ft in most places then? Am I reading this right? How high are the waters at the moment."

Simply take any point in the NO 'bowl' in terms of 'below sea level', add 3 feet to sea level and that is where the water will be in 12 to 15 hours.

I have visited NO but didn't pay a lot of attention to levees except on the riverboat ride up and down the river.

*** Those choppers should have been in the air this morning. And as for landing strips for transport planes...try the freeways...they are closed to traffic.***

And when the first landing C-130 punches through the concrete?

Logistics Takes TIME. This is a MASSIVE undertaking, and it's not just New Orleans! The Primary base at Maxwell is set up, communications and logistical assets should have come in today, and supplies should start through tommorrow...

Where does it turn around for take-off? Where does the fuel come from?

Well, the upper Missouri valley has been in a drought situation for a while now. So the biggest feeder into the Mississippi is way down at the moment.

Mayor: They shouldn't go to the Superdome. It's quite unpleasant there right now. Better to go to a second floor.

Me: He may have just killed some more people with that goofy advice.
