The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

New link on Slidell news.

Senator: Slidell area likely hardest hit by Katrina
Capitol news bureau
Much of Slidell is under water and likely sustained the worst damage from Hurricane Katrina, tate Sen. Tom Schedler, R-Mandeville, said Tuesday at 1 p.m.

Calling the devastation "total", Schedler said, only slabs remain where dozens of houses were blown down and several feet of water remain in the Slidell Memorial Hospital on Gause Boulevard as well as throughout the old town area off U.S. 11.

From the news conference: "Can and will New Orleans be rebuilt? Absolutely!"

IMHO there should be a series and thorough debate at the national and state level if that is the best idea. Or at least whether any federal money will be used to rebuild or insure such.

Sometimes the wisest course is to write off a total loss and learn from mistakes rather than repeat and compound them. They can't stop the landowners from building on and using their land, nor from pooling their resources to increase their protection, but we also shouldn't be federally subsidizing unwise and dangerous practices. And that goes for far beyond New Orleans and LA. Federal flood insurance that in effect encouraged and subsidized building in vulnerable coastal flood plains was just as foolish as high welfare/unemployment payments. Promoted unwise decisions, but perhaps among the wealthy instead of the poor. The insurance market did a much better job, if it was too expensive to build in coastal TX, FL, and Carolinas, there was good reason for it. If you want your oceanfront home, you can build it, but the gov't shouldn't be making it artificially affordable by removing the financial consequences of ignoring history and taking high risks. And there are plenty of Republicans to blame, along with the Democrats for the foolish development in coastal areas open to storm surge devastation.

Didn't really want to get into this debate while rescues are still going on, but we have to have this debate before too much is committed towards a New Orleans rebuilding that is just as likely to be wiped out next year as it was a month ago.

Another question:

If National Guard trucks can get them to the Super Dome, could they also get them out of town (and set up a refugee camp), or are the roads so bad that they can't manage the trucks?

Seems moving them to the Super Dome and then having to move them again later is double work, but if the roads are too bad to leave on, then I can see the point.

Hi, newbie. :-)

Some of these people have lived there for generations and have probably never been out of the state. They'll return, because they have no where else to go.

Canada has already surpassed Saudi Arabia as the largest supplier of U.S. oil imports, so I have no idea what that stupid radio host in Ottawa is talking about.

Most Albertans I know don't think of themselves as Canadians anyway.

Probably because it is hard to fathom a state would elect this woman as the Governor.

Because some people out there didn't want to vote for the fella who wasn't white...

Welcome to FR.

Sorry noone welcomed you on the previous thread (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1473373/posts?page=2484#2484), it moved so fast and then closed we never got a chance.

Prayers extended for your family: it sounds as if they are safe, though their losses may be great.

What you are describing from the flyover sounds horrific. Right now so much is up in the air, it seems hard to fathom they would NOT be able to rebuild... there is so much not there anymore.

How did that city survive before the levees, pumps, air conditioning? Building up such a metropolis in an easily floodable basin defies prudent city planning.
