The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

Those pumps were pumping out about 1 feet of water per hour, according to one report I heard. This is terrible.

It depends. 0.4 pressure treated is good for submerged construction. 0.27 pressure treated will last a lot longer than untreated, and untreated would have to at least start the decomposition process to be beyond salvage. I don't have a time frame, I just don't know how long that takes, but I know that untreated cedar won't last one season underwater or uderground or against concrete.

We missed that, but Sunday night we had dinner w/friends and the husband was talking about this movie. He was just blown away how close to reality it was.

Actually, the story sounds more like something a jihadi would tell, substituting tent for house and camel for llama.

At this point, it's "law of the sea" time (not the silly treaty).

IIRC, maritime law allows one to commandeer ships in port or nearby in the event of a disaster. However, all we'd have to do is tell the owners "Hey, help your fellow man, or George Bush will go on TV in four hours and announce that you didn't want to help Americans. Guess what will happen to your company after that?"

Wow... I hadn't expected that. Are you in an urban area of the state?

I'm Glad hubby is close enough to work to ride his bicycle if need be. Rough if you're out in the countryside.

The rain, as long as it isn't heavy, is a blessing from God. People stuck in their homes and apartments can collect it in clean containers to have some at least cleaner water to drink.

Small consolation, but it least this did not happen during the raging of the storm. New Orleans would look more like Gulf Port.

Just got an email from my wife's extended family in BR.

Made it through ok, but a lot of downed trees. The house in Biloxi is damaged, but they can't get back yet. Expect to be holed up in BR for awhile.
Thank God everyone is OK.

I just heard on KLIF that they and the Ticket and The Bone and the WOLF will be broadcasting all day on Thursday...at different Kroger stores in the Metroplex...

They will be collecting food for Kroger to deliver to Shereveport to restock the food pantries in those areas...

SO...anyone in the Dls/Ft. Worth----buy some canned goods, non-perishables and drop them at Kroger...or better yet, since Kroger is delivering....buy them at Kroger!!!! Please?

I've got an 18-footer. Where does on volunteer?

Off-color sarcastic comment deleted... :-)

This seems like a photographic negative of the "worst case" they way most people had pictured it.

Fears were for massive loss of life, but the city lives on; it looks like the city will (for a long time) cease to exist as a functioning society, but loss of life will be orders of magnitude less than initially feared... Prayers for all involved.

"Does anyone have an any idea if water on both sides of the river at the levys could compromise them? That's the only thing that could be worse at this point."

Yes, and no it won't compromise them.
