Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

CNN just showing replay of the lady saying Ocean Springs, MS is gone! Everything gone!
I don't know where this is. Is it right on the coastliine? What big town is it near?
Another problem with continued flooding is that every building there has already been affected by Hurricane forces winds. High enough flood waters could cause more structural failures.
JMHO, and it will piss a lot of people off, but I think it may be time for a serious discussion at the state and nat'l level about the wisdom of rebuiding New Orleans, at least to its former size. Either require them to institute a tax to fund a Cat 5 sufficient levy (very expensive) before any fed funds are used for rebuilding, or shrink the protected area to just enough for the housing and support businesses needed to run the existng industrial facilities(port, refineries.) Otherwise we could end up doing this again next year, or even twice next year.

Actually that 2nd image is indeed from a breach, not a Cat 5. The superdome is shown at the edge of the flooding, and it is right about at sea level. In a Cat 5, the storm surge would overtop the levee, 13' at its lowest point, and would fill the bowl until it reached 13' above sea level.
Saw a report on Fox yesterday that the dome is on the highest point in the city, about 25' above sea level. The balcony is a good 15-20 feet above that.

Jeeze .. this news was out hours ago, and if someone hasn't even announced the problem and spoken about solutions and thier evacuation plans for the further flooding, my mind is boggled. I think people must be paralyzed by the enormity of all the problems .. I can't imagine what the h*ll is going on. SOMEbody has to have some kind of plan to prevent the additional deaths that are surely coming.

Ok this clarifys it a little this is not as desperate as I thought it was. This is referring to the canal that goes to lake that the actual levee on the lake itself. Still bad but not devasting and uncontrollable as a breach on the lake itself
You'd think, in a city that's six feet below sea level, somebody might have anticipated at least some of this.
THat's less than the 440 yds(2 blocks) that appeared earlier on the thread. 200' is only about 67yds.
How so? If it is connected to the lake, without a gate, it will keep filling the city until the floodwaters reach the level of the lake.
Ocean Springs, MS population around 17,300.
