Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Anecdotal stories on CNN, 1 EMS rescued 75 persons, including a newborn, in just a 10 square block area.
That makes sense. You'd think there'd be some minor street flooding just from the rain where the pumps aren't working or storm drains are clogged.
Setting up temporary morgues . . . right now the bodies are "just kind of there" . . . National Guard will set up temporary morgues in key areas of city . . . disease will be a concern . . . (per Mayor on WWL) . . .
Even MSNBC has been better than Fox.
Don't know what happened with 'em, maybe like you said they were geared towards Aruba.
Has there been any more news on St. Bernard Parish?
God. CNN rerunning the interview of the reported breaking down. It's horrific. She heard people and dogs being electrocuted. Imagine how this night will be for the ones that live.
I keep picturing the night the Titanic sank.
Not that I have seen.
I am very much afraid you are right--and it sounds as if you do know of what you speak. What is the most helpful thing people like myself who are no where near this disaster can do?
She is very emotional. I can't imagine hearing the screaming, and then not being able to help.
This is very bad.
Oh Howlin I cant stop crying.

Awwwww, too bad. Maybe better luck next time.
There is no telling how many people are still out there - It looks like rescues are still going on at this hour.
LOL!
It does. I'm so glad.
Oh, For years on threads I've stated that Fox routinely completely botches breaking stories, and they're an embarassment to "conservatism" if they're supposed to be the official "conservative" news channel.
Today just confirmed that belief for me even more.
CNN (before replaying this) had a guy on who said around 500 people have been rescued--not all in the dark--but many! And I think that was in this 20 sq mile area Meserve is talking about.
i think your going to end up with a donkey
Seriously...I've been out of the loop for the most part...the pictures, the reports...I had no idea it was this bad. MANY prayers for all affected.
I-10 is only way in and out of the city . . . "Twin Spans" is totally destroyed, gone . . . almost "incomprehensible" . . . FEMA guy says "Worst ever seen" . . . no street lights, totally dark . . . looting a problem, but most of our resources are in "rescue mode" . . . drug addicts gone 2-3 days without and going into drug stores for "substitutes" . . . (per Mayor on WWL)
