I was just thinking about that. Maybe that guy was just talking about the parish he was in?

The actual story from WWL-TV:

Slidell suffers extensive flood damage; Mandeville, Covington wind damage, power loss

09:45 PM CDT on Monday, August 29, 2005

WWLTV.com

Northshore Bureau Chief Mike Ross says information from the Northshore has been sparse because there is no communication available from that side of the Lake.

He emphasized that no residents are being allowed back in to St. Tammany and anyone attempting to return is being stopped by law enforcement.

He said a handful of angry residents were seen at most exits – unhappy that they couldn’t go home.

St. Tammany Parish officials asked those reading about the situation on the Internet to warn relatives not to return at this time and no certain time has been set at which they would be allowed back.

The visual inspections of Ross and his photographer Mike Bland showed that Slidell has probably endured massive storm surge damage.

He said Lake Pontchartrain overflowed its banks and had chest-deep water from the Lake to the Old Spanish trail exit.

“You can’t tell where the Lake ends and Slidell begins,” he said.

St. Tammany Parish officials plan to send boats into the area Tuesday to assess the damage and look for survivors.

In Covington and Mandeville, there was extensive wind and tree damage and power was out to every place he went.

Mike Ross said more information would be available Tuesday.

Keith Oberman of MSNBC is blaming the current administration for flooding in New Orleans.

Someone on Fox today said the fault lies with many decades of Democrat controlled NO administrations.

These local Democrats sat around for years letting the pumping system deteriorate.

It was Bush and mike Brown who put forward a disaster plan for New Orleans several years ago.

Thank God for Bush.

I think CNN is talking about the area of heavy flooding up to the rooftops, where the rescues are taking place. The mayor is probably talking about any area that is flooded, even though much of the area visible in the afternoon copter shots apppeared to be street flooding of a few feet, many of them looked to be flooded just slightly above the foundation line, but well below the windows.

I used to give FNC a pass because of a smaller staff, but by now, they should be getting their act together. I am watching CNN.

It looks like they need an extensive bootcamp in doing breaking news for correspondents, field producers, camerapersons, writers, anchors, studio producers, graphics guys.....everybody needs some serious training here.

Listened to the mayor just now on the WWL link . . . "many, many reports of bodies floating in the water" . . . and yes, he confirms that the water is still rising . . . 2-block hole in concrete levee - 17th Street Canal is still flowing INTO the city . . . total devastation in St. Bernard . . .

They keep talking about bodies, are these people who have died in the flood or are they from the cemetaries? In NO, there are above ground crypts.

There's no doubt in my mind, as I've been saying for awhile now, that this is a cataclysmic event with horrific loss of life, communities and vital infrastructure. This IS the big one, barring any other monsters in this rotten hurricane cycle we've entered, God forbid. These coastal communities will never be the same ..rebuilt in time, yes .. but never the same. This is totally life-altering in the most basic and raw definition of that term.

So many vital issues: many dead, no power, residential & commercial structural collapse, bridge collapses, levee break, levee pump failure, oil rig damage and/or loss, contamination of the water supply, disease setting in, at least one vessel or barge leaking oil, total basic needs for perhaps hundreds of thousands of people for months and months, housing need in the tens of thousands (according to FEMA Director), water still continuing to feed into the area .. the list goes on and on and on.

IMO, it will be a couple of years or more before you'll start to see any semblance of normalcy return to this area. God bless them all ... the bulk of the population are now totally dependent on the Federal government and the goodness of the relief and charitable agencies for EVERYTHING and for a very long time.

Who knows? These initial reports are often wrong. The 20 square miles could be just the area east of the Industrial Canal or by the Lake, it could be the area with significant flooding of more than a foot, or the idiot mayor could be wrong.

Unfortunately, Google Earth can't tell me anything about this. It's not that magic.

I agree. You can only watch a reporter being blown away by wind gusts just so many times. Besides the weather channel wore that one out a long time ago.
