God bless you! The death toll from this storm is going to be devastating, despite all the Herculean rescue efforts.

I noticed a variety of the cable news networks sent big stars to Aruba this week, only to have them spend most of their shows narrating Katrina stories tonight.

Really makes the obsessive focus on the Aruba story look even more stupid than it was before.

Well this is one of the best threads ever. I've been up way too long and on the computer too long that my hand is cramping. Thanks for allowing a little levity this late at night. I'm off to sleep, mindful that there are at least fifty people who are dead and thousands who don't have the luxury of fresh water, ceiling fan and a real bed. Good night everybody.

I'm not a big Shep fan, and I'm tired of him. I'm glad that the French Quarter did not get damaged like it could have; however, there is so much damage to other areas. This was a bad storm, and I want to know what is going on.

No matter how much money is put in there, for all intents and purposes, their world as the knew it last night at midnight is gone

Yes, that is a fact. And yet ... many or most will eventually dry their tears and start over.

According to the Census, New Orleans' land area is 180.5 square miles. 20/180=11%. So either CNN or the mayor is wrong about the percentage of the city under water.

Hate it too--but with MSNBC and Cosby from Aruba or Fox with Bill O'Reilly, one has little other choice. And to be honest, the Aodora (sp?) reporter is very good--as was Meserve.

I think the causeway is ok - The condition/damage of I-10 is being described to be like the one bridge that was messed up by Ivan last year.

Back in 1983 we were in town for the Sugar Bowl - wandered around (just a group of dumb happy college kids) on our way to the game . . . a very nice lady (a resident) told us to get the hell out of the neighborhood we were in before we got robbed or worse . . . that's when we realized just what a scary place we'd blundered into . . . we did get out safely, but it was sobering . . .

Are you sure that your picture is the twin bridge they are referring to? Because it is right next to the Superdome, Hyatt, and all the TV cameras, yet no mention all day about it being gone. It would have been noticed. My bet is that they are referring either to I-10 east or the Lake P. Causeway.
