Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

And this is just in New Orleans.
Jeanne Meserve was in Houma? Is that how it's spelled?
I don't know what the situation is with FNC, but I'm wondering if they are able to cross the water to get to those other stories.
I'm just as tired as everybody else with Shep's Bourbon St. reports. I'm beginning to think it has to do with where they were when the water came up.
Not making excuses for them, I have no interest in protecting them. Just trying to figure out why they would be staying in one place.
hire a chopper.
Thank you very much.
I am sure they could kill the grid to the city any time they wanted to. They can do it from outside the city. I don't understand this.
Yeah while I was flipping channels.. I saw Brian Williams on NBC nightly news say that the first signs of unrest were occuring in the superdome, he did not go into detail but did mention that it was hot and there was no fresh air.
She spent the night in Houma, however you spell that.
The portable pumps live on semi trailers and cannot get into the area until the water subsides somewhat. The Corps Of Engineers also has pumps, but they must be flown in and assembled - and that can theroetically take weeks.
My dear, I was trying to be sarcastic. I failed, apparently.
;O(
She was on CNN talking to Aaron Brown.
It's on CNN.
http://reallive.stream.aol.com/ramgen/redundant/abc/now_hi.rm Oh, this is delayed video..they were showing mandeville...
Yes, it has been reported to be rising all day. Apparently too many pumps are down and there is a backflow in some of the pipes. Also an official this afternoon talked about the levees haven't been breached, but some water is getting past them. Didn't specify whether it was overtopping, perculating leaks, or the aforementioned backflow. Thankfully there are barricades up and they are not allow persons back into the city. No way they can do that until all the levees are checked for integrity.
she said she was 5 miles east of NO, I thought Houma was southwest of NO.
WDSU has literally hours of fascinating video that they've been rolling tonight . . . rescues, aerial shots, looters, you name it . . . I'm sure FoxNews could cut a deal . . .
Fox news flew their reporters into houston today...except shep and the dude in MS
This disaster was predicted five days ago on this very site.
By you and a lot of other people.
On that WDSU link, they're showing the looting again. Disgusting.
300 airboats--wowser! That'll really get things moving.
Dunno. WDSU is a NBC affiliate.
