Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

Sometimes I can't believe I am on FR. The whole idea of justifying looting is ludicrous. Or should I say loot-icrous.
Wow!. Just... Wow!
I'm already donating.
I have family in New Orleans and Plaquemines Parish that I am taking care of.
I don't need your sanctimonious attitude. Don't presume to preach to me.
Boy i hate to say it, but i'm not in the world of cloth diapers anymore. All we see are the throwaways at the dock or loading ramp, marina, campgrounds, roadside etc. Maybe if they had to pay more for them...... jennifer
They are under do not boil orders because of a broken water main. The water is running and will likely be safe soon. Might be the only thing working.
;)
I know exactly what you're saying.
The whole idea of justifying looting is ludicrous
....
Nobody justified looting needless materials. Get a clue and you stop being ludicrous
heh!
Something that came up on another thread needs addressing by the authorities.
Some enviro-wacko was decrying the amount of toxic chemicals to be released to the environment as a result of this disaster. I postulated that it is not the chemicals they need to be worried about (most will be diluted to below their level of toxicity), but waterborne disease that will result from broken sewage lines, human waste, contaminated drinking water, docomposing bodies (both the long dead and the recent dead), and insects from standing water. With that amount of water and the tropical-heat of late summer, we may have an epidemic of disease like we haven't seen in decades.
Just wondering if anyone has heard how the flooding is in Metarie around the South Clearview/Airline/Cleary area. Thanks in advance for any information.
I'd rather my baby had a rash than grow up thinking her mother was a looter.
Not questioning your good intentions, but a lone poster asking for funds is suspect.
Please direct all contributions to established charities.
Well, in a way much of NO did dodge a bullet. Now we have some areas under 12'of flooding, some under 6', and some with almost no flooding, while if the hurricane had been about 10 miles further west, or 10-20 mph stronger, all of the city could have been under 10-25' of water.
I saw earlier that the Lake Pontchartrain storm surge was 10-12', and the lowest points on the lake levees were 13'. 2' more feet of surge, and the picture would be amazingly worse, with even the higher French Quarter under 5-10' of water.
So perhaps they dodged a bullet to the heart, but took two in the legs.

Then stop ringing your hands and replying back to me with your whining. Diapers are needed, deal with it OR don't. (shrug)
It did not look good in the Metairie area. Underpass on I-10 before the Metairie Rd exit was completely flooded.
But don't feed Al baby
Checking So Cal TV news of Katrina after work, they were broadcasting that swift water teams were on their way to the area but they weren't sure where they were landing. Their fire trucks were headed that way too on military transport. After newscasters said "more news at 11," I hopped on FR.
