Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

You Red Cross lovers will love the question the caller just had on Larry King about the response vehicles. Ya know, the one we just saw a pic of underwater that someone posted here.
We are hoping that our employer (SBC) offers to match employee donations again as they have in the past. This will double our modest donation.
It's probably the safest place in Mobile to be when a hurricane comes calling.
You know nothing of what you speak.
Howlin, can you repost the link to the picture thread? Thanks!
This is so weird, listening to the anchors on WDSU freaking out when they're showing a scene of devistation and they realize it's where they live or where they go all the time. Their voices are almost surreal.
Earlier today in a piece on Fox news he was quoted saying "lots of bodies". I haven't been able to find out more but from some bits and pieces I've read and heard I'd say sadly there is going to be alot of drowned people.
Great dot-connecting post from someone with "inside" information. Kinda speaks for itself about the training restriction. When I lived in Houston I remember seeing a notice on the AstroVillage motel sign about a certain charity (not the Salvation Army) having a conference there, and thinking "You'll not get any more of my money." Way too fancy a place for a "charity" to meet at, using public contributions...
I've heard about snakes and ants, but nothing bigger........not that snakes aren't bad enough all by themselves! Yuck!
>>But Jim Cantore was broadcasting from Biloxi last nigh<<
No, actually he moved to Gulfport. To the retirement home for veterans.
See post 1060 re:Slidell--wind damage, probably not a lot of water.
I heard that too, but other people told me he was responding to the question (essentially): what are you afraid you will find, or something.
did yall see this?

Breaking - Weldon says Able Danger docs destroyed.
Does this help you?
I wish I could get the WDSU link to work.....
Just read on another forum that Eden Isles and Oak Harbor in Slidell are destroyed....I pray that is incorrect info.
Utilities helping other utilities goes back further than that. Some of my earliest childhood memories go back to Hurricane Carol in 1954 in southern New England. We had no warning, my Dad was at work, the fall school term had not started yet and my Mom gathered us all to the front of the house or cellar away from the tall trees. She was obviously distraught because my Dad did not come home for hours because he couldn't get through on the roads. We were without power for seven days and saw the power and utility companies from Virginia and mid-Atlantic states working on the lines and eventually power came back on.
