Hurricane Katrina made landfall today at 6:10AM CDT, and she continues to drive northward into Mississippi and Alabama. Several local radar sites are down. Tornado and flash flood watches and warnings are widespread.
President Bush has declared major disaster areas, clearing the way for federal aid.

You should have completed that sentence with..."and presenting you with an invoice".....their donated blood, for instance, is NOT 'free' by any means.
Looks like most of what we are seeing is coming from the 9th Ward, which I believe is where they said the levee from one of the canals had a failure. Not sure why we have no aerial coverage of the beach areas along the MS coast.
I suppose if you take into account size along with wind speed, you might make the case. I fear, however, their day of hyperbole is not over yet.
A battleship, a huge airplane, heck anyone could confuse the two.
I heard a quater by the week's end.
My donations go to the Salvation Army. The Red Cross can have my blood, but not my cash.
Has anyone heard from cajungirl? Last she posted was around 12:30 this afternoon and a tree had come down in her yard.
Disaster Services has nothing to do with the blood side of the Red Cross. TWO different groups totally.
You already have your facts wrong.
It will be the Red Cross over the upcoming weeks that will be taking care of most of these people. That is just the bottom line fact. Whether you like the organization or not...they are still going to be the ones to get the job done.
First rescues only started about 2 hours ago.
It will soon be dark again with God knows how many people out there stranded.
lol if it does that I will be expecting it to take out my ragged mini van:)
Well, we have an updated article on Biloxi (7:21 CDT):
Familiar landmarks destroyed
These reports were sent by City Editor Kate Magandy:
At DeBuys Road at U.S. 90., the Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants were obliterated.
In Biloxi at Edgewater Village, most of that shopping strip mall was devastated. The McDonald's is gone, the Village Sports Pub is gone.
The Hard Rock Casino on Casino Row in Biloxi, which was scheduled to open next week, will have to be rebuilt. The superstructure was severely damaged.
There have been reports that there are several casino barges that were pulled out of water and onto land.
Elvis Gates, a State Farm insurance agent in Long Beach, went to downtown to survey damage. He found nothing left. ``Everything south of Second Street is gone. The harbor is gone.''
St. Thomas the Apostlic Catholic Church, which sits on U.S. 90, celebrated its 100th anniversary in August. It is now gone.
When Camille hit in 1969, Long Beach residents were able to hold Mass in St. Thomas School gym. There is nothing left of that but the superstructure.
First Baptist Chruch in Long Beach has been leveled. Other reports indicate that everything south of the tracks received catastrophic damage. Part of U.S. 90 collapsed in front of Edgewater Village.
There have been reports of looters, and police will arrest people who are driving around, Biloxi Police Bruce Dunigan said.

Shoot on site orders were an incredibly effective deterrent years ago.
As long as they have each other, Jrabbit, they are blessed.
If you have seen what they are showing on WDSU, I think you'd agree that there's no way to "hyperbolize" this.
FOX now has unreal video on - now saying half the city of NO is under water.
Thanks again and especially for the prayers.
Me too! The path looks like it's going to pass east of Memphis, but through Jackson and Nashville. Looks like it'll then head to Louisville, KY, and follow I-71 up to Cleveland, maybe easing over towards Pittsburg instead.
Y'all stay safe - I expect to have a few more storms here in 'Nooga tonight as well so I'm going to keep an eye open. Hopefully, the mountains will knock down the tornado threat a notch or two.
"not a single announcement has been made to the crowd, no information whatsoever. "
Pretty scarry ha?
