Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VII
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 8:10:23 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin conceded that as many as 100,000 inner-city residents didn't have the means to leave and an untold number of tourists were stranded by the closing of the airport. At this hour, people are still filing into the Superdome after security screening for weapons and contraband. National Guard have brought in 360,000 MRE (meals ready to eat) to feed the estimated 30,000 storm refugees in the Superdome.

Yeah. They've got very good coverage!

Do you know if the story claiming Clarence Thomas was 'left behind' in NO was accurate or was the MSM mistaken?

"the incompetence which is obvious"

We recognize the problems, but no one has offered any suggestions which are logisticaly feasible.

Boats up the river? How many boats? How fast can they travel?

Yeah, me too re: seeing a car. I don't think Katrina has hit there yet. They said there's another eye wall developing. That's a new one on me. I'm actually going to listen to Art Bell tonight.

It is OBVIOUS to anyone who watched this that the mayor (and the governor) were paralyzed with indecision.

Ask the people in the Carolinas and Florida if they think that mandatory evacuations should be taken lightly. They have been evacuated so many times and had such a hard time getting back that they don't even leave anymore.

Do these people not have TV or radio? Why do they need to mayor to tell them to evacuate? When storms roll through Georgia, I couldn't care less what some politicians have to say. I listen to the weather service and make my own decisions.

This is getting just as bad as the democrats blaming Bush for everything under the sun. I know you feel a need to blame someone, but sometimes bad things just happen to good people.

They just said on Channel 2 what you are saying -- the radar cannot see that far out to pick up the backside.

What makes the super dome so safe? I wouldn't be in there, no way. They said there are new buildings that weren't there back when they tested it before for wind speeds.

Ya know, even though this is a very powerful storm, it is also an unusually large one for its power. So am wondering, could we see some weakening right before the eyewall reaches the city simply because the north and west side of a notable amount of the storm will by then be over land, some of which is more than just swampland?

As mentioned, one of the main reasons for not evacuating is not being allowed back in.

That's one reason why I have such a large problem with au-thor-i-tay. The main thing I looked forward to when growing up was not having to answer to a parent ever again.

These people who are stuck on the freeways are there because they didn't evacuate THEMSELVES earlier. Maybe the mayor is an incompetent jerk but the people of NO knew the storm was coming and they knew the city is below sea level and didn't leave until the last minute. This happens with every storm evacuation. If you wait till the last minute to leave expect trouble and delays.

"Repeating the midnight CDT position...27.9 N... 89.5 W. Movement

Thanks. I plugged that in. It indicates a slight northerly turn, but not enough to rule out wobble.

The Forecast Discussion plots are rougher than the Vortex plots. The FC's are in decimal degrees while the Vortex ones are in degrees and minutes, which cuts down on the "smear error" a little bit.

Taking the last two FC plots only the straightline course runs through Kenner, or 9 miles west of the center of downtown New Orleans.

That would be my bottom line also. If news crews want to stay, I'd advise against it, but okay. Civilians other than that should be evacuated.

These civilians get into trouble and then police and fire crews have to expose themselves to danger unnecessarily. That angers me.
