Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Posted on 08/28/2005 2:38:16 PM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

The new position, assuming it stays on the current course, puts landfall 7.88 miles east of due south of Houma.

All the models show a curve to the north, but this is probably the furthest western (best case scenario) we can express. Still looking for good news, not finding much.

going due north now it appears. It looks like the earlier track east of NO a bit will be more correct, but it will not go that far to the east..within 30 miles

regarding Superdome...

because they are stupid and criminally neglegant IMHO.

read this article:
I suggest you read articles on the SuperDome. It is not recommended above Category II, according to some, and has NOT BEEN TESTED.

From:
http://www.wwltv.com/local/stories/wwl092304thanh.1295648.html

On the surface, the Superdome seems like the most logical choice for an emergency shelter, and city officials are leaning in the Dome’s direction for future shelter needs instead of schools.

“Anything above a category two makes them pretty much ineligible because they’re not wind resistant enough and they're in flood prone areas it looks as though we're pointing to the Superdome in being reinforced with the proper back up system as shelter of last resort,” said Nagin.

It appears a facility as large as the Dome could hold up in hurricane conditions but Bill Curl, spokesman for the Superdome, says that is yet to be tested and if there is no other choice then maybe the Dome could serve as a shelter.

“Only in dire emergencies. The Superdome is not a shelter,” said Curl.

According to Curl, the assumption that the Superdome can withstand hurricane force winds is just that: an assumption. He says more analysis is needed to determine what the Dome can actually withstand because previous wind studies have become somewhat irrelevant since they did not factor in the new high-rise buildings around the Dome.

“They create a wind tunnel effect and that needs to be tested. There were initial studies that indicated 130 miles per hour, but we don’t know,” said Curl. He adds that the Dome is not impervious to the same elements other areas would be exposed to.

“If we were to lose power, if we were to lose plumbing facilities, if a storm were to hit and create flooding in the area; the Superdome would not be a desirable place to be,” he said.

****

That article was written last Year, and nothing has been done to reinforce that structure.. I wonder what people would think if they read the Article I did about that place.

Even The spokesman said it should NOT be used a as Shelter. You cannot get any more specific as that.

Time to stop focusing on that and better to move onto plans securing the needs of the displaced who could not travel out of harms way.

OK, I suggest they clear out one of the grocery stores of non-perishables & water, and take them over to the superdome. How are they planning on feeding those folks anyhow? Do they think all of them have brought enough food & water for their families for several days?

Thank you. I am having a hard time worrying about my fellow Americans in harm's way, many for no fault except they are too poor to leave. I've been there.

I pray for them, and pray they help and take care of each other as well.

yep.

This is an absolute disaster either of life and property or of planning.

Dear GOD I hope it is just a disaster of planning and that we will not have to see large numbers of dead because of it.

Thank you!!! When Dennis was coming on strong over Florida this July many people here prayed hard that it would not do terrible damage. It hit--but the back end (don't remember the technical weather-guy name for it) almost collapsed.

I remember shouting "Hallelujah" when I heard that--and I'm sure my response was echoed by a lot of Floridians!

I think he is aware of the fact, if he see's the light of day. He seems more and more ...(lack of appropriate word...morbid) everytime they go to him. I noticed they are not cutting to him as often either.
