Hurricane Katrina Live Thread, Part VI
NOAA - NHC ^ | 28 August 2005 | NOAA - NHC

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

The gates of death are about to close. The Jefferson Parish head guy, from his new Parish seat in exile with his aides in St. Tammany said as much about 30 minutes ago.

The New Orleans NBC feed (WDSU-TV/DT) is now down; giving nothing but static at the moment. If it comes back up, it will be simulcasting MSNBC and perhaps the Baton Rouge NBC affiliate.

I have a sad story about Houma. I have MS and post on a couple MS forums, and one of the guys on the MS forum took his family and evacuated Houma today.

But they got stuck in such traffic gridlock that he was worried they'd be on the highway during the storm, so they returned home.

He's hunkered down, and I gave him all my Florida "hurricane" advice about finding a safe room, etc.

Very scary, he has a wife and little kids he's worried about. He says he doesn't care about property damage.

He's stressed and neither stress nor heat (when the power goes out) will be good for his MS symptoms.

His posts made me really feel for the poor guy, and I know there are lots of others in his position who may have tried to get out but didn't.

BTW,what about all those cars on the road, what's going to happen if they can't clear the highways before gale storm winds? Just heard somebody say they went 30 miles in 5 hours.

Likely, it isn't the people in charge who are responsible for the stragglers. Some folks thought they'd ride it out, then realized just how dang bad it is so they decided to get out of Dodge. They're the ones stuck on the road now.

I still haven't decided which is worse, hurricane, earthquake or almost tornado which are what I have experienced so far.

I've only had the earthquake and almost tornado. Waiting for a tornado is pretty darn scary because if it hits you are toast. The earthquake is bad, too, because it's out of nowhere and you don't know what will happen. After our big earthquake in 01 in Washington, I would get nervous at night when planes crossed overhead because the rumbling reminded me of the quake. (I was cured of that after 9/11 and planes flying overhead took on a different meaning for me.) I'd say all-in-all natural disasters just suck!

Let's see, Geraldo, Chrissy Matthews, CNN....what a heck of a choice!!!!

Oh, I forgot the Weather Channel, but everytime I turn to that channel for some reason, it is a commercial! LOL

Oh, jeez, whatizisname at Superdome saying that some people forgot to bring medicine. One lady didn't bring her insulin, which required refrigeration...that is a possible deadly problem there!

Regarding all the talk about engineering and the superdome - My guess is in a case like this someone (Engineer big wigs) convinced the Gov and then from there the President that the superdome would be a safe place for those people. Otherwise if there was no 'safe' place the C-130s would have been sent in.

LOL.......do you just scan FR, waiting to find a thread to post something about your 'Heels on?

Well, yeah, I plead guilty to an extent. But the Katrina matter is serious, and my thoughts are with the folks in New Orleans, and inland as well, and perhaps I shouldn't make light of the situation.

Both on FNC and on this thread, there's a debate as to whether the forecasters are "crying wolf." I don't think so. Unlike Atlantic Coast hurricanes, which often veer away as they approach land, there's nowhere for Katrina to go that won't be catastrophic for someone.

Prayers up that the engineers are right and the Superdome can fend off up to 200 MPH.

It should get a stern test tonight with the gusts of 190.

this security operation entering the superdome is insane - they have live footage of it, they are actually patting down people as they come in, frisking them. this is too much.

They have to protect everyone in there, no weapons, etc. I understand that, but let them inside, and then search them. They could be there for days, tensions mount, fights start, etc. Nagin should have let them in Sat am.

I'm now watching the ABC local affiliate from the news link at the top of the thread.

They're saying I-10 is packed right now. I hope those people get to safety before it's too late!
