Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico and New Orleans metro area. Thousands of people did not evacuate New Orleans. Outer bands of Katrina are reaching the Louisiana coast.
Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be in their safe locations.

WWL News just said they will stay on until 12:00 tonight.
I'll second that!
Indeed. My (mandatory) civil engineering courses were taught by a professional forensic engineer. His assertion was that every single catastrophic structural failure was the result of a fundamental design flaw due to some engineer screwing up big time, and he had dozens of examples. In fact, they were actually brilliant teaching examples on many levels -- he'd present a real case and ask us to identify the design flaw. Most structures, if designed correctly, are significantly over-engineered.
I guess will find out which is which for the Superdome.
I'm online with friends in Houma right now who were too stubborn to leave. They really don't think this is a big deal at all. It's too late for them to get out now. I had hoped they would listen to reason.
Thanks! Completely missed that!
Shout out for Salem. There's a station right by where I live that was still at $2.42 this afternoon. I could tell you where it is but I would have to kill you. I don't want the lines to get any longer. :)
Brokaw's thinking "Thank Jebus I retired - they could've put ME down there!"
Gretchen was raised in Minnesota, (also Lauren Green).
GERALDOs opening got me running to the store for canned goods.
And I live in NJ!
I was watching that NBC affiliate channel 6 online, and they just signed off. They said they were going to have MSNBC on, but now they aren't available online at all.
Is there other streaming live news coverage I can watch? Wish I had cable!!
The eye of Katrina took a jog to the north, then back to NW. If the eye passes W of New Orleans, worst possible news. Right now the eye is moving as though it will pass directly over the city.
lol.
Doogle
The eye is as big as Lake Ponchartrain. Gasp.
Whorealdo scared the bejeezus out of me...Im in Illinois and gonna board up my house!
they are searching people in an emergency??? What's going on? The large Taliban population show up??
"I was shocked seeing Brian Williams!"
I'm shocked too to read this. He's an anchor person I believe. They could have sent a low-level reporter rather than their best man.
He's a great reporter, btw.
WWL is the TV station I am listening to. It is going off the air in a few moments.
The Superdome does hold 70,000......sitting in seats to watch a game.
Sleeping and feeding arrangements for long-term refugees will considerably reduce the capacity.
Won't the drop in pressure do that- I have seen warnings to open windows in approaching tornedoes.
Actually, an approaching low pressure area will, to a degree, suck atmospheric gases (your air) from your shelter into itself. But before you suffocate from lack or air, the force and turbulence of the winds striking your shelter will likely rip it apart. Thus, you stand a far greater chance of being killed by flying debris.
Geraldo is EMO!? Wait'll I tell my daughter. Her friends will love him. ;)
