Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

I can't believe that they don't have some plan in place to help the elderly and the stranded tourists get out of town on busses or trains or something! What will happen to those people?

Fox says there are hundreds of people outside of the Dome waiting to get in. This just sounds like a disaster in the making, along with everything else about this storm.

Sorry, MizSterious, I know nothing about the SuperDome, I live up near the Canadian border. Perhaps another Freeper can answer your question.

You may be thinking the Metrodome in Minneapolis, or some of the other newer domed stadiums. I'm pretty sure the Superdome roof is concrete and steel, at least it looks like it from all the pictures I've seen.

I'm gobsmacked by this hurricane. Last I heard it was at 110 mph, now 175 and strengthening? Oh my God.

Reports from an Air Force hurricane hunter aircraft indicate that the maximum sustained winds have increased to near

175 mph

...with higher gusts. Katrina is a potentially catastrophic category five hurricane
on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Some fluctuations in strength are likely during the next 24 hours.

No one should stick around for this one. Prayers for the protection of all in it's path.

Coastal snakes and turtles were seen moving out in droves yesterday. That's what began to really frighten me.

The idea of using the Superdome as a shelter makes me wonder whether it can even stand winds of 175 MPH. Anyone know the wind loads it can withstand?

FoxNews:

Oil platforms in the gulf have not been secured. Oil company officials expect some of them to collapse.

Point being: We all are going to pay. Look for significant increases in gasoline, heating fuel, natural gas prices.
